MONOPOLY

DANGEROUS

TO PUBLIC BT W. A. ATKINS iSTAfF CORSES PONOENT I. N. SERVICE WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 Merger of th four principal express companies into the American Express companies, authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission, now makes it mpossible for any other express company to enter the field In competition with the consolidated company, it was charged by Commissioner McChorJ today. McChord asserted the merger only creates a greater monopoly in the express business. II aaalla the majority opinion of the commission snd assorts that th granting of tha application to combine the four express units was fraught with element of danger to the public Commissioners McChord and Mayer wera arrayed against the other seven commissioners upon the proposition. ' "I cannot agree with the conclusion of the msjorlty that the public Interest will be promoted by this consolidation," McCliord said. "The authorization of the consolidation will destroy every semblance of competition in the exprosa business, both as to rates and service, thus confirming n existing monopoly both aa to rates and service, thus confirming an existing monopoly. "It may be true that there Is now no competition to express transportation charges. But prior to tha consolidation there wsa competition with respect to service which was of benefit to the public. "It will now be practically impossible for enother company tn enter the E. C. Minas Co.
