Lowell. Indiana, Dc 4. 1320 Editor Tlmast Is It not a good tim for the "Chamtrs of Commerce" and "Boards of Traao" of Lakn and Torter counties to urge on our congressmen the Importance cf waterway for th. relief of 1U IMJBWW rwp
freight congestion which often occurs to delay the, sending: of eastern and southern and foreign markets, the crops of the farms of the west and the large amounts of manufactured products that are often delayed because our railroads cannot furnish cars to handle the goods? I understand some surveys have been made of late, besides thos made years ago, to show a feasible barge canal route from the south end of Lake Michigan to or near Toledo, Ohio, to connect, by waterway, the great grain producing and manufacturing districts of this middlen-est, with the eastern states, by a route much less than one-third the distance around Vh Straits bjhI tli Detroit river to Toledo. Such a canal would
not only give a shorter line and save much time In transportation, but would lengthen the season for water transportation from four to six weeks each fall and nearly as much In the spring by reason of lea In the Straits. No doubt that some of the railroad corporations may oppose such a plan, as they have in the past, but It Is well known that for many years the railroads have not been able to furnish enrs to move, promptly, the immense quantities of freight that pile up in elevators and warehouses, toon after thu boat traffic via the Straits, is cut off. Our Canadian friends sre credited with suggesting that the United States ought to fpend many millions of mo-

ney to help build a ship canal around the rapids In the St. Lawrence river, to allow vessels from Chicago to reach the ocean for foreign ports. Would It not be better national policy to build new canals and enlarge some of the old ones on our own territory, than to put United States money Into euch works on territory controlled by any foreign nation? Arter a great many years, wo are about to get the Chicago to the Mississippi waterway. 'When completed, this will give relief to foreign shipments and some of the southern states, but we also need better business connections with our eastern states in exchange of product. I hope we can all see our way to boost for
