The first steps towards the erection of a buifing was taken in 1908 and
Mrs. Kennedy appointed a committee to secure funds for the purpose of purchasing books. In May, 1313, on a suggestion of Mrs. 'A. Ottenhelmer a tag day was held and a large sum of money was contributed. The ladles solicited funds until the latter part of 1903, when a committee went before the city council and petitioned that body to pass an ordinance to make a levy for a library maintalnance. The eouncll unanimously voted to levy one mill on the dollar which was the maximum levy. The first library board consisted of Mrs. A. H. W. Johnson and John Farovold and was appointed by the school board in 1909 to serve two years. Mrs. E. V. Walton and George "W. Lewis were appointed by the city council to serve one year. Dr. A. A. Ross, J. G. Allen and Mrs J. D. Kennedy ewre appointed by the circuit Judge to serve one. two and three years. Tnts board was organized In September 1909 by electing J. G. Allen, president Dr. A. A. Ross, vice president, and Mrs. J. D. Kennedy, secretary. The matter of a Carnegie library was discussed In Sept 1910 and Dr. Ross. Mr. -Farovid, Mrs. Johnson and
the librarian. Miss Sweezey, were appointed to take the matter up with Mr. Carnegie. Their effort proved successful and Mr. Carnegie donated 140,000 for two libraries to be located in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago. , In March, 1910. the first two libraries were opened to the public with a total of 739 books on the library shelves. The third library now located at Calumet was opened December 1915. Today these three libraries have on hand 23.2CO books, touching upon every subject known throughout the world. Kennedy, the originator of the public libraries In the Twin Cities and to the present Librarian Francis Kendall, Byers, who has worked very hard in placing the Library system of the Twin Cities, among the most popular of the State of Indiana. The present officers of the Library Board Include II. R. DeHoIl, president: J. C. Reppa, Vice-President; Mrs. J. D. Kennedy, Secretary end Frances Kendall Byers, Librarian.
