TIL AT II. HARBOR
Flier SrUubusky. employed in tha soft drink parlor at 3S01 Ieodar street, Indiana Harbor, was given a hearing: vestfrday afternoon before Special Judge K. M. Hoycn on a charge of Belling and havintr liquor In h:s possession. Federal prohibition officers Montgomery and McMann of Hammond -who arrested the defendant Xuv. 4 stated that they -went to the defendant's place of employment with a search warrant and found a glass of liquor on the bar and an empty pint bottle that had contained liquor lying: on the floor. The defense attempted to show th.t thrie young1 men had entered the soft drink parlcr and asked Slubusky who was attendiug bar to try some of their liquor and assured him that it was 100 proof. Slubusky In his statements said that he refused to taste the liquor whereupon the three men emptied the bottle and asked him to throw the bottle away. Before so doing they poured a little whisky in the glass and left it standing on the bar. About this time entered the prohibition officers who finding: the empty bottle and the gls of whisky on the bar, placed Slubusky tinder arrest. Counsel for the defense asserted that two other men named John Sulski and another whose nam- could not b remembered had be:n in the parlor playing: pool, and were in there at the time that the youngr men attempted to fell the liquor. However. Mr. Sulski was not in court to substantiate tha defense's statement. Judge Koyce gfter a careful review of the ca?e found Piubusky g-uilty on the charge of having liquor in his possession and fined him and costs end 30 days In the county ajil. The Jail sentence was later suspended by the judga on the ground that the defendant was merely an employe of th3 parlor and under the federal prohibition law he is granted this right. The court bitt.rly rebuked witnesses for defendant and for the plaintiff in the manner in which they secured the:r testimony.

CITY CLERK
The reflr.'nR- influence of a woman hai been felt in the Gary city court. Ilefore .Mrs, Ralph Ross took the office of city cirrk a w-ek atro the manners and customs of th cou.'t were the same as in the frontier days w hen Gary was as rousfh and uncouth as an Alaskan prospector's settlement. rom the early dc.ys the city court had inherited a long liBt of bad habits. It was not necessary to remove the hat trom the head or the cigrar from the mouth. Nobody took particular care to hit the cuspidor. Attorney felt free to cuss each other from time to lime. The reformation has been so sudden s to shock the court attaches. It went into full forc and effect thl week. At the door the bailiff reminds the incoming- male to remote hla hat mnd cigar. Conversations are barred during the trial of a case. The- floor Is Kept spotless and the atmosphere pure. The No. 9 DouRlas Specials that grraoH the lawyer's tables are now planted firmly underneath the owner's. For which credit is due Mrs. Ross tvhose duties as city clerk include those of clerk of the city court. It was even necessary for Mrs. Ross to f-omplain. City Judg:e Dunn and Prosecutor Hunter saw at once that the I11 system was pased. The city court

A colored owman was on the stand yesterday and when she wan asked to tell her story she turned to me and told It. While It was amusing there Is something significant in the incident. On the other hand there was another woman who didn't look at me once. I believe that unfortunate women would be glad to have a woman judge and that bad women would dread being tried by a woman Judg-. "I think that the women of a city who are interested In the welfare of the people and in noclal work will g;iln valuable insight by visiting the police court. Whenever a case of peculiar interest Is to be tried in this court 1 Intend to call up women I know would be interested and have them attend.'' Mrs. Ross declared that, the work f ihe city clerk's office is pleasant and that she sees no reason why women cannot be successful in public office.

The different orpanlati..Tn trn city of Hammond stand willingly back of the clerks, morally and financially, and are in a position to do so until the flRht is won whether it bo weeks months or years. Organized labor is not patronizing these stores and if thi strike Is not settled In accordance set forth in the clerks' agreement they never will. Organizations who are supportlr.K the clerks have tried every available means of arranging- a meeting with the merchants to thrash out the differences between the two. The merchants have refused, to meet a committee from any labor nrnanlzatlon. When a firm who labors for self and self alone and refnsns to recog-nize hos that are in their employe who puts f rth their honest and best efforts t further tiio interest of the firm's business we can't see any pood reason why they should have the rympathy of organized labor or the public in general. geo. crrp. efrigferation and Meat
In less than an hour after an animal is dispatched in a Swift & Company packing plant, it is hanging up as meat in a room brought byrefrigerating machinery to a temperature just above freezing. From that time until it is in your own ice box within two to three weeks it is kept at the same temperature; first in the coolers at our packing plants; next on our refrigerator cars, more than 6,000 of which are constantly moving to market with their perishable cargoes; then in our refrigerator rooms at our branch selling houses; then in your dealer's ice box, and last in your own. Only for the few minutes while it is being put into the refrigerator cars at our paclung plants, or taken out of them at our branch houses, or whisked to your retailer in our trucks, is it exposed to any change of temperature. Without a skilled use of this system of cooling, made possible by modern science, you could not get fresh meat, prepared under most sanitary conditions, except at greater expense unless you happened to live so near live stock raising centers that your needs could be supplied from live stock raised near-by.
If the foregoing raises any question in the mind of the reader, we will endeavor to answer it, upon request.
