A FAIRY TALE OF SCIENCE. A rr!'Mc fairy ta'e of science in unfolded It an interview given out by tbe mayor of rueblo- Colorado, afrr a journey from Denver to Pueblo by airplane. He oi-vruparos the trip with one he mads halt' a century .-s0. At that time of the first journey Denver -was a town of not more than 3.000 people. The trip to Pueblo was made In a cart, the best method of transportation available and took six weeks, and the travelers did not meet a soul on the journey, not even an Indian. The mayor made the alrpjane flight in '0 minutes. The remarkable developments of the last 50 years suggest a peep Into the future 50 years hence. Will New York people slip sway on Saturday afternoons for week-end visits at California, or Mediterranean resorts? Will a woman by th:U time have achieved the presidency of the United States? Will tuberculosis have been -wiped off the earth? Will wireless telephony have been so perfected that it will be possible at will lo get into communication with a friend, wherever he may be? Anyone with an imagination can conceive of other n velopments ss strange or fascinating; as those indicated in these cjucstloui-. and i emote or incredible as their realization a half century from now appear to be. they tv;'! be n more improbable fhan would have been 'he statement of tb.o mayor of Pueblo, as he made that toil some journey of six weks in an oxcart, that 50 years later be -would fly over th same course in 50 minutes.

SHORTAGE OF POSTAL WORKERS. The shortage of postal workers disclosed In The I'rtted States civil service commission's announcement of weekly examination? to fill vacancies Is attributable t i th low- -salaries paij. There is hope, however, tbaj he sympa hv which the public has for these liardv. fi.-king employes of the government will lead to further Improvement in their pay. As was pointed out at the time of the last increase granted tbem, their gain wa3 not. to ba measured by the raise received, but by the general recognition that It was Inadequate, which is assurance that additional consideration cannot bp denied them. Compelled to face every sort of weather, burdened at the holiday seasons and on special occasion like po.ii'oal campaigns, when material is eut through the

malls in such large quantity, by heavy packs, the letter carriers have no easy task. The people realize that they are entitled to more generous salaries than are now paid. The work has Its compensating feature, however. To the man chained from morning until night to a d!k, a Joh which permits one to he in the open as much 3 the postman Is. Is not unattractive. If walking and fresh air are as beneficial as they are reputed to be. the letter carrier's work should be promotive of health. WILSON NOT HATED. During 1h campaign the republican .-itutudu toward the president frequently was denominated as "hate" by democratic organs and rartoona were drawn portraying republican leaders as engaged m the 'morning hate" of Mr, Wi!?on. Opposition to his policies was alleged to have l.ate as a basis. Clearly this was a misrepresentation of th republican tooling, riate" I not the right word. It mav dserlne the stato of mind of his personal enemies but not or the public in general. If it had been s-aid that republican thoroughly disapproved of the president's acts r would have been tho truth and in the light of the election would have Included 1ho a large number who lour yeara ago gave their votes lo Mr. Wilson. Thniisrh th president m,y no? he hntfd, he him f b;.s done little to inspire opposite feelings in the mass of the American public. He never did invite Jove. My hi& t rat erica 1 efforts, his command of Kngll.d' and the masterly way hi wbtoh he prent'.d a cae he may have commanded admiration but he never received personal affection. He gave of bis brain but not his heart. If be is grieved because the people do not love him. the fault lies in that he has exhibited to the people only bis intellect. Whatever other attributes he may possess have beenwithheld from public view. Mr. Wilson had united support iu his war policies. Partisanship did not enter, but he would not relinquish partisanship in retain, lie was willing to receive but he would not give. He declared "politics adjourned' but in its practical application it referred only to the republican party. Where It became necessary tor re publicans to oppose him they did it on principle and not because of hate. That it was done on principle Is fully proved by the result or the election. The American people are not cv '. They would prefer to admire rather than condeu .. but they are merciless in judgment when it is a question of right. That is what Mr. Wilson has had to face.

GENERAL WRANOEL exhibited more concern for bis personal safety than some of the otters who led armies against the Bolshevists. He seems to be observing the philosophy of the adage that he who lights and runs, etc.
