ANSWER "HERE!" The annua! Red Cross roll call Is now under way.
I'ntil Thanksgiving day effort will be directed to con
tinuing every membership through 1921 and to adding many new names to the almost universal list. It is to bo pod that response will be unanimous, for it la especially important that in its development Into a great . :,p;?ncy for mercy in peace the organization shall be uuhamptTed. Only if the society is maintained with am
ple reserves aud unimpaired facilities can it hold itself !;uv for those emergences which come swiftly and
without warmiug. , The task to which the Red Cros3 plans to devote itself is of importance to every citizen. It proposes not only to minister to suffering, but to prevent suffering, "j -"-The field for this labor is vast. The education of the V Tcople at largo in the fundamental principles of hygiene, the prevention, cf conditions from which epldemies of diseases arise, the ceaseless research from "'"which epochal discoveries come these are some of the major -works. Ambitious plans have been prepared; a LJ start hau been made; the work must go on. Membership In the American Red Cress is the symbol of interested citizenship. So little is asked from ;T . ach. so much has been given to all, that it is a privilege rather than a duty to participate in the service of r.,r :nve of "The Greatest Mother in the "World."
lated Into viirorcus. militant loyalty to the responsible ngencies of government that his loyalty is worth while. No man can be "loyal and neutral In a moment," wrote the Hard of Avon. Men who carry water on bctb. shoulders, who are insincere and super-agroeable In their daily conversations, can never hope to command respect or carry convicticn in the tests of life. The man who Is frankly loyal to those institutions in which he believes and to those persons with whom he is allied, if the man who is admired, even by hia enemies. For the man who Is dlsccuraged, downhearted by the rush of events, oppressed by petty failures, there ia no stimulant like the compelling power of an intensive loyalty. I,et the man who Is not making good In his work dedicate himself to a new sense of allegiance to those with whom and for whom he labors. Out of vigorous loyalty to his fellow workers and his employer will ccme the spirit of which success is forged. Lot the man whose life seems dull and sordid find a loyalty a lojalty to his home, perhaps, to his city, to his college, (o his church and life will be transformed for him as the gleam of purpose dispels the clouds of cynicism and mistrust. Out oT loyalty to others will come that greater loyalty to self that transmutes a person Into a per scnality. a slave into a servant, and a hauman Into a man. Let us attain to a loyalty and hold fast to It.
ORDERLY PROCEDURE PAYS BEST. In Alabama 40 "night riders' have been arrested. Apprehending them In the act does not mean that any severe punishment will be visited upon them, but it does mean that law is still operative to some exent in that section. It is stated that most of those taken into custody are young men who own their own farms. It is easily understood that they should wish to get a remunerative price for their farm products. That Is businesslike and praiseworthy but the practice they have invoked in the mistaken idea of Its effectiveness goes much farther than its application to this year's price of cotton. Anarchy does not pay, no matter what the pn vocation. People looking for homes and places for investment do hot go as a rule where cenditions are unsettled. And there is where those who resort to lawlessness, even though it is done to correct an evil. Injure themselves. A temporary profit may be gained, only to be lost many times over. Orderly procedure pays best.
r.
LOYALTY THE TEST. Most persons who are happy have in them those elements of steadfastness and conviction to which applied loyalty gives visible form. It is, Indeed, difficult to conceive of any continuous pleasure In an existence not n'otlvated and spiritualized by unwavering alleglance to certain fundamental tenets of established truth. But loyalty to the general, the abstract proposition, is likely to be ineffective probably as an infiueace upon one's self and mcst certainly as an in--tluence upon others unless it is visualized in loyalty to the concrete Issue, the definite institution, the llving person. Every man, perhaps, is conscious of a desire to be loyal to his God, but it is only when he translates that fidelity into a loyalty to his church that his purpose bas meaning. Every man, too, desires to be loyal to Ms country, but It is only when that wish is trans-

MANY A MAN finds it hard to learn that the sooner he gets down to real work the better satisfied he will be with himself.
FASHIONABLE dressmakers raut be given credit for cutting the gowns in a way that will utilize the largest skin surface.
THERE ARE A lot of persons who are kept poor because they are not able to see the difference between cheapness and economy.
IN SPITE of all that medical science has been able to do, the man with a sore head seems to be incurable.
THE TRAILER la useful in its way, but it does not command the respect given the car that does the pulling.
