OVERLANDS BLAZE TRAIL OF KIPLING'S

TO

MANDALAY

Fres hirom the hold of the itttrntr that carried them over itu, two new Overland cara. part of the first consignment of the new cars to reach the shores of India, blazed the trail over "the road to Mandalay" made famous In Kudyard Kipling's familiar verse. The two cars, new and unseasoned, successfully negotiated the 500 mile iun from Rangoon to llandalay over roads that had never been traveled before by a motor car. The trip was made by Majsr R. 'W. H. Harris, representative of the John N. 'Willys Export corporation and T. M. Van 'Wyck. a Rangoon newspaper man. It rivaled in severity many of the tests to which the Overland has been subjected in the United States. The trip consumed 43 hours. Included on the 510 mile run were five hours of continuous low grear work when the cars plowed through IS inches of sand. Some Idea of the hazards of the trip may be gained from the fact that in one instance at the approach to a river bed. the cars were compelled to make a sheer drop of 11 feet with rear

wheels locked. In makmj this descent, however, the only damage done was the ripping off of both rear tire For miles. Major Harris says, the car was driven at an angle of 40 degrees because the major was cornrelied to drive the car with one wheel in ruts made by native bullock carts, while the other wheel remained in the center of the cart wheel tracks rcariy two or three feet higher. On another occasion the cars traveled for S miles over the paddy fields. For Irrigation purpose;? the fields are divided Into numerous little areas w ith
