OCEAN FLIGHTS ABANDONED. When the Atlantic was crossed last year by bcth airplane and dirigible the feats were hailed as promising ppeeiy establishment of overseas air service. It was demonstrated that the ocean could be crossed in that form of craft and enthusiastic persons at once saw viion of fleets traversing the air and bringing Europe and America within a few hours of each other. That no effort was made to repeat the achievement this year aeems odd. The distinction of being the first to accomplish such a fent no longer acting: as an incentive to effort removed -the sporting phase, but if air t;avel ever the ocean has commercial possibility it roisht have been expected reasonably that preliminary-steps In that direction would have been taken before this time. The-season for such experiments i3 .ibout at an end, so that.it is probably that no air passage will be attempted before another year at least. Tossibly there is not less zeal fcr air travel than last year, but it may be that those who would be foremost in establishing air fleet3 have been obliged by necessity to await more settled world conditions before engaging in an enterprise that at best ia attended by hazard. In the last year avtaticn has progressed, but tt has been confined to travel over land for the most part. Flying for 3,000 miles over an unbroken expanse of water is quite different from a trip over lanl where there are many possible landing places if a stop becomes necessary. It may be years before regular flying over -the Atlantic is realized, but at least occasional fllgbt3 should be expected and it Is a cause of some surprise that nothing of the kind was attempted this year.

U. S. PAID THE BILL. Testimony taken by the senate committee investigating campaign expenditures at the resumption of its hearing In Washington, has disclosed that administration officials have been using government funds to defray expenses incurred by their political activities. It has been revealed that four assistants to Attor-ny-General Palmer and the assistant of Secretary of Agricultural Meredith, both of whom were candidates for the democratic presidential nomination, attended the democratic, conveutlcn at Sn Francisco at gov

ernment expense. Vouchers were produced before the committee showing that these, five officials were in Saa Francisco throughout the convention and returned to Washington immediately afterward, and that their travel and subsistence were paid by the government upon the presentation of these vouchers, sworn to by the men concerned, who said under oath that they were on "government business" at the time. The committee, however, was unable to And any pressing government business that could possibly have required the presence of all five in San Francisco during the democratic convention. The disclosures so agitated Senstor Reed, democratic member of the investigating committee, that he declared that if the men had been ent to San Francisco at government expense to help presidential candidates they Bhould be cashiered with their superiors who approved their expenditures.

ALASKA TO SUPPLY MEAT. That our northwestern possession 1s developing into rich storehouse of all kinds -of products is shown by announcement that the department of agriculture is pending an expedition into Alaska with a view to in

creasing reindeer production and thus to furnish the United States with an additional supply of meat. It is reported that there Is enough treeless land not adapted to agriculture in Alaska to provide grazing ground for 1.000. 000 reindeer. A small herd importtd from Siberia in 133 has grown to 150,000. Reindeer meat would be a desirable addition to our food rescurce3 and as such would be welcomed. It is daily becomlsg more evident that gold, which was the magnet that drew people to Alaska until recently, is likely to prove cf less impertance than some of the other resources of our northern possession. Paper manufacturers are turning their attention to Alaska's vast spruce forests, and much of our canned salmon has been coming from there for several years. Secretary Daniels of the navy department and Secretary Payne of the department of the interior are aiow in the northern territory to determine if its coal fields can supply fuel for the Pacific fleet. "Seward'f folly" in purchasing Alaska of Russia in 188 7 for $7,200,000 i3 dallybeing looked upon as less fallacious.

A WOMAN MAY remark that the photographer has flattered her in his work, but she does not want you to believe it. THOSE SCIENTISTS who are not having much success in getting Mars to talk might try Venus with better results. AN EFFICIENCY expert is a person who is able to show that nearly every other person is making a failure of his system.

EVEN SUGAR may 60on again be on speaking terms with the average pocketbook. A MAN IS different from a woman in one respect. It makes him uncomfortable to do shopping without buying anything.

JUST NOW It looks as If it would be a long time before the raisin will be restored to its former respectability.

I had an operation and still I failed, and iu the eight years I suffered I had four doctors and none helped me. Sly mother-in-law advised mo to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I was then in bed, and after the first bottle I could be out of bed, then I took Vegetable Compound Tablet.? and Lydia E-Iinkham's Blood Medicine and also used the Sanative Wash.
