rKtlol Crop Improvement Service.) r si aIIB time is coming, if indeed 1 not already here, that the sign on an elevator "cash for wheat" will mean little or nothing. The old method of buying wheat was to five every farmer practically the same price regardless of quality, the elevator man trusting to luck in mixing to make his profit. The federal grain gruCet have pot a stop t this and the heavier and cleaner the grain, the more money Is paid the fanner. In some localities it Is the practice to bid on the grade of wheat which Is most plentiful, and to pay a premium of a cent a pound, for Instance, on all wheat which is heavier and cleaner.

In spito of the market quotations a good car' on any grnin exchange will bring a premium. During the past season when spring wheat has been very light, a good plump car would often bring a premium of from 25 to 50 centa a bushel In spite of the market. There are many varieties of wheat which should he discouraged. For instance, the millers do cot want velvet chaff on account It beiiig soft and starchy, and red durum which Is creeping in. Is being Jiscounied radically- because it is fit for little but chicken feed. In other sections a strong effort is being made to establish the variety best adapted to soil and climate. This means money for everybody farmer, dealer; ' miller, baker and consumer.
