SOUTH SHORE
Several persona had a miraculous eiil'o with the.ir lives and the station of tho South Shore Electric line in Clary was wrecked this morning as result of an accident which will probably cn tal at loss of something like S75.00i A string of eisht pasfenser coaches which waa being switched into aiding in the yards, crashed Jnto and carried away massive bumper, hurling the end of the first car over the platform and caving in the west end of the bride" station. The car wedged itself Into the end of the station a distance of six or eifrht feet. Two lone passengers In the waiting room ran to safety only In the nick of time. Had they been slttng in the seats on tho west of the station they would have been caught In the crash and burled
alive with the falling brick and aide walk. A lady ticket agent in her cage in the center of the station .wg almost
paraliied with fear. The motorman.
Fred Hohm. jumped for his life at the time of the crash and not a person was
injured in the accident.
According to the statement of Motor-
man Hohm following the crash, he lost control of the car. That he waa back
ing Into the eiJing or switch at a high rate of speed la evident. Ordinarily the
bumper would bring a car or string of cars to a stop, but the compact waa so
great that H tore away the bumper and
the oar lunged over the platform and into the station. Four or five other cars buckled up almost .wrecking them. The
west end of the station was demolished.
Officials of the line promised a thorough investigation this morning.
Wants Britain to Meet and Satisfy the Irish Aspirations t.ON'DflX. Oct. 5 Terence MaSwiney. loid mayor of Cork, waa still alive and conscious upon the fiftyfourth day of his hunger strike today. He waa so weak he could barely move in hi bed.Former Premier Asquith in a letter to The Times calla upon Great Britain to g.ve Ireland her independence. "1 am not alarmed by the spectre of an Jrish republic." said the former premier. "Men do not long fight for phrases, but for realitle. "The aggressive, but Impotent policy towards Ireland has reached a fitting climax in an unexampled campaign for which the government must bear the responsibility of military and police reprisals. Two conditions govern and limit the solution: "1. The Irish should be made to believe so far as Great Britain la concerned what is offered comes frtm an honest and responsible source. "I. We should, after making allow
ance for the provisional abstention of a genuine local minority meet and satisfy Irish aspirations. "Nothing will fulfill the second
clause but tho bestowal of a status of
autonomous dominion rule In the fullest and widest sense." The ex-premier declares that the urgency of the Irish situation demands an Immediate solution and calls for an administration "backed by the power of the sympathetic acquiescence of the Irish people."

BT HARRY I.. ROGERS STFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE! IMTTON, O.. Oct. 6 With confidence increased as a result of the conference last night with National Chsirman George White and Ed It, Moore, Gov. James jr. Cox planned to spend tho day quietly at Trails End, recuperating from his western tour In prepatlon for another strenuous stumping trip which is scheduled to begin Wednesday mornirp. Reports to the governor from all ources are the same, namely, that In the past two weeks there has been a decided s !ng in sentiment, toward th democratic candidates. He was not surprised to hear of the declaration of Senator Borah at Danbury last night against any league or association whatsoever, and expects sooner or later that both Borah and Johnson will definitely split with the republican candidate. "My ' e xpr:ence on camplr.jr trips as a boy taugh me," the governor said, "that if you try to make the blanket cover too many. It will split In the middle. The republicans are trying to mek tbe Harding pisiform cover all elements in the party, and a split is bound to come."
