Auto Quiz

Answers to tst Week's Question. 1. To test a magneto armature contct a test wire from a six volt storage battery with the primary lead, located opposite the drive end of th? armature. V. ith another test wire touch the armature core an instance. The armature is pood if a spark Jumps the secondary f.ap and if another occurs at the point it contact. This test is similar to the tction which takes place when the magneto is In operation immediately upon contact of the two battery wires the current flows through the primary winding ar.d condenser and is then induced into the secondary winding. 2. The flywheel of a four cylinder engine is required to do more work and is usually heavier than that if a six or right because there are certain periods in cycle of the four during which very little pressure is exerted on the crankshaft by the pistons. An explosion occurs every half revolution, and during the lapse between power strokes the flywheel must carry over the shaft. In u six. as in engines of more cylinders explosions overlap an explosion or power occurs before a former has been completed therefore a lighter flywheel is just as effective. 3. A V type engine cf eight or twelve cyUnders may have one or two camshafts, but one only being the more popular. A single shaft may have an individual cam for each valve or may have each cam operating two valves. Both kinds are in use. ' 4. The condenser of an Induction coil cr magneto armature consists of two fets of sheets of some soft electrical conductor such as tinfoil, each sheet being insulated, usually by mica insuUtion. These sheets are all connected to each other, one set alternating with th"e other. and are shunted across the interrupter of the magneto or coil by con. r.ertion with the primary winding cpn-

ductor and ground. The condenser's object is to consume extra current created when interrupter points separate. It makes a quicker spark and does away with arching at the points. 5. A good paint that will prevent rusting of exterior of engine Is a light colored paint composed of six ounces of linseed Oil. a half pound white lead in oil, one half ounco lamp black and about two ounces of turpentine. 6. The sparkplug should always be placed nearest to the inlet valve. This is the proper location as It will be enveloped in the fresh charge as it is drawn into the cylinder, m readily igniting it. and as burned gas and oil would foul the plug were it placed near the exhaust valve. 7. The automatic spark control Is a centrifugal governor located at the top of the timer shaft, which increases the speed of the timer contacts as the speed of the engine increases. The weights of the governor move outward on increased peed. causing the shaft on which the timer is mounted to turn farther to the advance position, or toward that direction in which the governor rotates. 8. The piston In an engine which is operating at SOC revolutions per minute, and which h?.s a stroke of four inches, would travel at the rate of 333 1-3 feet per minute. The result Is obtained by adding the downward and upward strokes of a piston in inches, multiplying this sum by the number of revolutions per minute of the crankshaft and dividing this result by twelve to get the answer in feet per minute. 9. To remove a tight fitting stud, the simplest way without damaging the threads is to screw two nuts on the stud, lock them together by turning one nut against the other, and placing a wrench on the lower nut turn out the stud. 10. A good way to find a leak In a radiator, possibly the easiest if the leaJt is very small, is to drain the radiator, cover the filler cap and inlet, and plug the outlet, leaving just enough space so that the hose of an air pump may be inserted. Immerse the entire radiator in water and pump air into it. A leak will force bubbles to the surface of the water. This Week's Questions. 1. MANY TRUCKS HOLL ON AIR

A conspicuous development In the truck industry is the general adoption of Pneumatic Tires. "I have been using a 2-ton Indiana Truck equipped with Croodyear Cord Tires for 2 months successfully, hauling lumber through a section of heavy sand. I am confident I could make no progress without these pneumatic Truck Tires,' says E. S. Hickman, Howard. Georgia. Definite advantages accrue from the use of big pneumatics on motor trucks. East Chicago Garage & Sales Co or East Chicago, local distributors of Indiana Trucks, says that trucks will do more hauling at less cost when equipped with pneumatics, than when equipped with solid tires.
