COX DISOBEYS

OCTORS

IN FAR WEST

BT HARRY L. ROGERS 'STAFF CO-RESPONDENT I N SERVICE fey ROUTE WITH GOV. COX, POCATELJ0. IDAHO, Sept. 15 That doctor order t time may b disobeyed with Impunity apparently h.a been droontratel by Gov. Jame M. Cox. Jroocr4tlo presidential nominee. After a two-hours outdoor apeech at Boise la-et nlht and a 80 minute talx at PocteUo tbla morning hi voice ws, If anythlna;, aomewhat Improved over yesterday ben the epeoiallst !n atteadance told him he should forego open air speaking for at least a week. The governor proceeded toward Utan

confident that another day would see

him "a fit as ever." The reception given him by Idaho

audiences has convinced Gov. Cox

more than ever that he was right Sn his contention that the league of nations has never been properly put before the people. "It needs only to be explained to win the support of the great mass of wes-

tarn and middle western voters." he

said.

The Irish question again came to the front la the governor's Boise address, when a man with a Gaelic accent, asked. "What about Ireland?" Gov. Cox commended him for his "loyalty to the

sod where your father's were born,' and said;:

'"We fought for the principle of self-

determination. At present the case of Ireland cannot be taken into even a emlres court. Under Article XI. or the League of Nation, any member nation can call It to the attention of

the league council." "Why Lloyd Geo'ge says the Eng

lish government will go to smash before it will free Ireland." objected the

man. "This Isn't to be an English league, my friend," replied Governor

Cox. "It 1 to be a world league and

after March 4. 1921, it will be my duty

and my privilege to bring the Irish question before the league as It will be the duty and privilege of any na

tion to call attention to any matter

which disturbs the harmony of Inter national relationship."

The governor's' attack on the "front

pfirch" campaign was especially pop ular with Idaho audiences, and vol

untary reference to it by the crowd

later in speeches' was frequent.

At Boise, when Cox asked if anyone

present could tell him where Senator Harding stood on the league questions

there were cries of "On his front porch." The audience applauded.

ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE BEGINS CONFERENCE

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 A drive for more rigid enforcement cf the pro

hibition law opened here today when 6tate and national officers of the

Anti-Saloctt League met in conference. While the conference was not called for political purposes. Wayne B.

Wheeler, general counsel for the league, in addressing the gathering declared that It has been learned that "liquor Interests are collecting money to elect a president and a congress

whom they claim will favor a beer

and wine amendment." "Any candidate who accept the in

dorsement and financial aid of the li

quor Interests to accomplish their purpose will have a hard time to convince law-abiding cltisens that he Is worthy of their support." Wheeler declared . Tty leaders were urged to bring about closer co-operation between local and federal officials In the enforcement of prohibition as one of the mast effective means of wiping out illegal traffic tn liquor.

FranX W. Agan. opponent of prohibition 7.4 aJUj rred H. BabbUt. who demanded a "reasonable modification" of the Volstead act. S.160. Congressman Torter H. Dale, had commanding lead in & four-cornered race for re-atrrvlnaUon. Congressman Frank L. Green and V. S. Senator

IHEY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE REASON

Why are so many special Judges appointed to try liquor cases by Judge Dunn of the Gary city court and why a.ra so many of the sentences suspended? This 1 what Captain Vodlcka of the Oery police asks In a report filed at the office of Chief cf Police Forbis thla morning. The report reads as follows. Morris Miller and Harry Fa gen, who were arrested on September 19 on a charge of violating the state liquor law were tried today by Special Judge Draper. Miller was found guilty for the fourth ouense. fined a sum of $180 and the SO-day sentence suspended. (Why Suspended). Fagan was found not guilty. On tbe 13th. of September Miller was

tried on a charge of violating the state

liquor law. flnued $133 and the SO day sentence that was imposed was suspended and today they again suspended his sentence. The above repcrt is under

stood, with a large question mark and signed by Captain Vodicka. For months the Gary police department have been trying to get co-operation from the police court In the prosecution of liquor law violators, but It Is understood that they have been able to get but little assistance. It Is customary for the court to impose a fine and also a Jail sentence, but In S5 per cent of the cases the sentences have always been suspended. The police do not object to leniency being shown to offenders brought in on the f.rst offense, but when they appear In court charged with their second, third and fourth offenses and have their sentence suspended there is something n-roog some where according to the police. The police say that without the cooperation of the city court they are powerless to put the Volstead act into force.

URGES

GERMANS

TO SUPPORT COX

RENSSELAER. I.VD., 8ept. 15 Addressing a democratto meeting: bere last night, Senator Owen of Oklahoma, made a dtrect bid for Americans of German extraction living In Indiana to vote tbe democratic national ticket. Much of his speech wa devoted to Imploring German-American voters, whom, he fears, have wandered from their former party affiliation to upport Governor Cox for the presidency. He urged entrance of the United States into the League of Nations and declared that when America enters the league, as tt will do if the democrats win, .that "it will be In a better position to mitigate tha severity of the peace treaty wtth the Germans than the United States should be completely outside of the league. He said also that he would be happy to so America open It market to the Bale of German securities. Ho asked tbe Germans ta forget the war. Senator Owen said: "While the war was goln on. 1 thought American citizen of German

extraction were, as a whole, entirely

loyal to the United States. They bought Liberty bonds and their sons fought with our troops. Just as other good Americans did."
