B. LEONARD TO PERFORM IN

LOCAL ARENA

. Tcte Herman seems have little i (iubt that he will he able to retain his bmiam weight crown in today's battle at East Chicago an J yesterday announced that he intends to ko after the feather weight championship also. In order to do this he has called off .h;s trip to Europe which he has been Fianning and will remain in Chicago in 'lie hore of getting a bout with Jvhnny i Kilbar.e. j Herman intended to go to England : immediately after his bout with Shar- : key and has already been signed for a bout with Jimmy Wilde on English j foil. No date for the bout has been i set and Herman has decided that it J would be a mighty fine thing to go to i Europe as both bantam ar.d feather j weight champion. He is willing to meet ' Kilbane for the championship if the; present title ho!d"r will make 125 i pounds for him. He himself is now wtphing very close to 1 1 S. Arrangements are now being made to get them together at the East Chicago arena. Kir.ny Leonard is another champion who will perform at the East Chicago arena soon. He has been signed to meet Pal Moran in the local ring in two v eeks. Sept. 25. and fromall indications r. r.d (tope it will be a real battle. Moran h.ti- two wins over Charlie White,, who pie the champion a hot run for his m 'ney at Henton Harbor on the 4th c July and has also made a fine record Ri,-ainst others who are pushing Leonard h.aid. At first it was planned to hold the bout on ept. 15. but the time was t M short and it was necessary to make it a week later. , Herman wijl in all probability b; .-round Chicago at the time of the Ler r.ard-Moran fight and after he sees Leonard in action it may be that he will get ambitious and decide he also wants the light weight crown. At that he is a real champion in his own class and there are plenty who will back him if h gets a shot at the feather weight crown. Hall, sporting editor of the Chicago Examiner gave on the outcome of the game which was played Saturday, Svpt. 4th, between the Betz Co. ana the United Chemical Co., of West Hammond . Now that the correct dope is on hand there is no question as to whom the game goes to, and thats hould interest the Chemical manager and players who know so much about the national pastime. Mr. Hall states that. "As the ump:re stood behindhis decision," and d.d not change it, the game goes to the Betz Co. by a forniet of 9 to 0'. The Betz team holds first place in the Industrial league and if the Chemical Co. defeats the Chicago Telephone Co. in their last game, then they will have to play the Betz team for the championship. Should the Chicago Telephone Co. turn the table and beat the Chemical team, the Betz team will be the winner of the pennant. THE OLD STRUGGLE TO BE RENEWED By LOUIS GORMAN The 15 baseball fans who witnessed the last game between the Times and I'ostofflce will probably be very glad to hear that Sunday at 11 a. m. at Harrison park, these two crack teams will .-.gain cross bats, it is rumored that both teams are greatly strengthened find I personally know The Times Is considerable strengthened as I .have purchased a new glove, and we also have procured the services of several stars who promise great things. Bones Bates eteran and star of the Lowell Apple Knockers and one of the best fielders on Xo. 1 Linotype at The Times office will hold down right field. We have also secured the services of Otto Van Borstel and Joe YVeyand. the former is recognized as one of the best horse-f-hoo players in thi3 and other vicinities, and promises to make several ringers, while Joe Weyand is a well known local star, who was unable to be with us at the last game. It is rumored that Baker of the press room is going to try and improve his batting by using one of the large ink rollers off the webb press, and believe me if he does the ball will get a dirty fwat as said roller hasn"t been washed a far back as anyone can remember. We were unable to sret a rmr.m.i. record of the last game as we ran out of paper In the seventh Inning, but for ! tnis game we nave secured one of the large rolls of print paper and we expect to have a complete record. Of the reorganized Postoffice tcam very little is known, but if they have strengthened enough to beat us with that new glove of mine and those new f-tars I mentioned they will have to be pretty good. Our manager just told me that we had a stonewall infield, but I was at tu park last night at the band concrt and I didn't see "any stone wall. I guess he was thinking of some place c)s The Times lineup rroviding the alarm clocks don't fail Sunday will be as follows: Baker, cf; Borstel. 2b; Frank. 3b; Gorman, ss: Weyand. If; Gochrir.ger,. LEONARD KNOCKS OUT PHILADELPHIA. PA., Sept. 11 Een ny Leonard, lightweight champion, knocked out K. O. Willie Doughlin of Bet!Jehem in the ninth round here last night. Loughlin stopped enough punches in every round to knock out the average fighter, but he refused to go down and kept fighting every second. Loughlin landed with a left hook that slowed up Benny at the start of the fifth and Leonard drove his right to the Bethlehem boy's body. Loughlin claimed it was a foul blow and started to walk to his corner. Referee Brennan ordered Loughlin to h'.s corner. While sitting on his chair Chairman John Smith of the Boxing Commission ordered Brennan to count over Loughlin. It was no time for disputing and at the count of nine Loughlin was out of his corner fighting like a flock of wildcats. Loughlin had Leonard dazed in the eighth, but was too weak to take advantage of it . Benjamin broke through wit.i his right to Louuhlln'a chin the ninth roun'-l Efer fifty-five seconns of ,1ghtit.i:. He also made a greta one-handed catch in left field that was good for three bases .

Next Sunday the Cophies will play: the Indiana Harbor Nationals at Mark diamond. Game called at two o'clock. CICOTTE BEGINS MORNING DRILL TO REGAIN FORM I Eddie Cicotte. once nremier nitr hrr of the White Sox, began his period of morning drills yesterday and Judging from the words of one who saw it, Eddie is liable to regain his old time form inside a week. Anyway he worked hard and Boss Gleason was there to work with him. In the afternon. Cicotte sat on the bench and watched his mates trim the Red Sox, and it is understood he will be back at the south side yard this morning tor another session. Manager Gleason feels Cicotte should be Just as good this year as last and as in 1917. Because Eddie has been off form for the last six weeks or more the boss figured there was only one way to remedy things, and that was to give his star hard work. If h doesn't regain his style, the hard work will do neither him nor Boss Gleason norar.yoneelse nor any one else any harm.
