Piatt Odamj in charge ot the Italian. .Brown in charge r.f the Japanese and Schroeder in charge of the French. The letter follows: "My dear Mr. Dickson: Since no mails have been delivered and Americans who are here say that we may not receive any for weeks to come, I am .-ending this to America, to be mailed. 'I wish I could tell you what a fino rftr.e we have had and are having. Cable stories to the contrary notwithstanding. There were small inconveniences a.nd discomforts but altogether it was floe. "This city and life here reaJa like a story book with the narrow streets, wooden shoes and 'old witch' brooms made by tying twigs on a stick. The people are the hardest working people that I have ever seen talking I mean. They will talk for minutes and minutes over the most trivial matter and after It Is settled they will again go ail over it two or three times. However, they are certainly fine to Americans and will go to any length to be accomodating. nv" are living In Oudean School in the heart of the city. It is nine stores high and the dormitories occupy the two ends of the space. A court :20 feet long and 80 feet wide occupies the qenter between two high fences. A locust tree occupies the center with a flower bed around it, The tree is only about SO feet high but 5 feet n diameter at the base with severa small playhouses in the branches. 'All the base of the court outside of the flower bed ie covered with tile. O'her smaller trees cover the court with perpetual shade. "We axe served by the native people here and some time we have had. First 'hey would cook no breakfast for us at all. Then they would serve no butter, tea nor coffee with meals. For brerUtfust. when they finally learned that we must eat in tne morning, they scrambled about aix to ten egs for twenty athletes as hungry as bears. Finally we got more for breakfast, but this morning they served gluey rice and sardines for Wreakfast and there was a near worli war started. "The meats here are simply the finest ever. And if the English have better lea than they boast here I don't blame them for liking it. It is simply delicious. "The wrestling Is to be done In the Zoological gardens, as is also the boxing. Before you receive this I suppose you will have a cable of how it all came rut. "You may be interested to know that there are several Y men here. Marriott has full charge of the Grecian athletes, Piatt Adams has charge of the ITa'ians. Brow n of the Japanese and Schroeder of the French. They have the largest Y. M. C. POLICE FIND

BOX
IN SUITCASE
TVhen the Gary police were tipped off several days ago that Anna Marakossky. a Tolkstoa woman, was mysteriously carrying a large brown suit case. It was believed that she was operating under the guise of a "whiskey runner" and the police expected to throw light on the operation of another million dollar whiskey ring with her arrest. So Chief of Police W. A. Forbls detailed two plain clothesmen to hunt up Anna and find out what she had In the suit case and learn the nature of her business. A day elapsed and the officers were unable to rind any trace of their supposed whibkey runner and it was not until last night that they spotted Anpa coming down the street carrying that much talked of and mysterious suit case. "What you got in there," speke up one of the "dicks" a3 they brought her to a halt. "Oh. nothing much, just some old clothes I was taking home," slyly lied Anna. The officer was not fcalistied with her explanation, howover, and proceeded to examine the contents, but it would not open, neither did Anna have a key. "Something more than old clothfs in here," said the plainclothesfhan as he shook the suit case and felt somethTng heavy rattling on the inside, "guess you'll have to come along to the station and we'll look what's in here." As the task of opening the suit case started Anna started to get nervous and probably wished the had wings and could fly away. Snap went the lock, open cam the cover and a colu shiver shot up and down the owner's spine. "Just some old clothes, eh," said Captain Vodicka, eyeing Anna, as he lifted a piece of goods from the top of the case, displaying a brightly polished wood box about a foot and a half long, a foot high and a foot wid. Examination of the interior of the wooden box revealed an electrical outfit, little burtons, dials and othevmv STerious little contrivances anil behold, underneath the array of electric parts the captain found a bundle of white paper and two new crisp dollar bills. "Ah, our Anna is a bogus money counterfeiter de luxe, instead of a whiskey runner." said the captain. "Where did you get this outfit and what were you going to do with it," he questioned her. "I do not know anything about it. a woman gave it to me lo take home raying she would call for it in a day or so, I did not know that thing was in there, she told me it contained old clothes." The phony money making machine is one of the cleverest pieces of work that has been unearthed by the local police in years. According to CTltef Forbis. the owner of the machine is able to reap a harvest in a short space of time and It Is probable that th owner was about to make a haul when the machine was confiscated. This Is how it is worked according to the police. The owner of the machine first hunts out an easy victim that has money and tells him or her they will he let In on a good thing if they want to invest a couple of thousand dollars, and keep their mouth shut. The victim is then shown how the machine prints fresh new rr!r.p one dollar bills or any other denomination that the
