I ELGIN RACE
(SPECIAL TO THE TIMES) ELGIN. ILL., Aug. 25 - Active work of preparation for the Elgin Road rare which will be run Saturday was started by drivers entered in the event and officials of the Chicago Motor Club today. Two or three days this week will be alloted to further prartice for the event and it is expected that this will rebound greatly to the advantage of the race . Several of the officials of the Chicago Motor Club made trips around the course esterday and found that the heavy rain of Friday and Saturday which necessitated the postponement of the event from the date originally set had resulted in putting the track in far better condition than it was at any time last week. The rain has packed down a few loose spots in the roads and these will be further oiled and rolled before Saturday. Ail of the drivers entered in the race have signified their intention of remaining in camp for the race this week and it is possible that one or two
nw- cars may be secured at "post cn- j trie?." Post entries v ill require t he I unanimous consent of drivers already1 entered in the contest as well as thoi acceptance of the officials of the C'h!-i rago Motor Club and of the American
A uton-.obile Association hut it is be!:eved that this will be icadtiy forthcoming. Cliff Durant. who is to pilot a Che-r-vlet Special in Saturday' ra e declares he believe? that the race Saturday w-;M be much faster than w null have been the case had it bten hid on its original date. "Elgin is unquest i-naMy the sportiest course in the L'nited States at present." declared Dura 11! w ho has won an enviable reputat'on as a road race driver. "I have driven over most of the road courses in the T. nited States tut I have never found on w hich equal '"I Elsin as a test of real driving. Santa Monica, -which is the only other rogd course of consequence is nothing bttr than a boulevard run compared to Klm."

Dare Bancroft. Shortstoppirp of a kir.d rarely seen on the Npw York Polo grounds or any other field is being done these days by Dave Bancroft, one of the bulwarks of the Giant infield and a very prominent participant in the rush which the Giants now are making: toward the head of the league. The manner in which Bancroft ranges up and down between second and third bases, occasionally flashing- over back of second bae or into left or center field, killing oft potential base hits, n-.a'kes him one of the most valuable shortstops in the league.
