Michigan avenue, is far beyond that of a year ago and it is expected that the attendance this year will be the largest since the palmy days of 1310. TVIN CITY K. C.S GIVE SHUT OUT The Twin City Kaseys hunj up another victory at the General American diamond on Sunday afttrnoon, when they defeated the strong K. of C. team from South Chicago by the score of 1 to 0, in one of the best played games ever pulled off in either East Chicago or Indiana Harbor. It was the toughest kind of a pitchers battle, from start to fir.ish with Morgan bavins a slight shade the best of 11 c ing to the visiting hurler's one bad Inn Irs at the start, when he allowed East Chicago to score the only run of the game in the very first frame. After the first round, however, it was nip and tuck all the way with neither side having any particular advantage. South Chicago's first man up in the Initial Inning started off with a clean single, but was left stranded on the aacks when the next three men went out In order. McShane, leading off for East Chicago In their half of the first, worked Pinner for a pass and stole oond while Keenan was striking out. Galik followed with a pop up to the fjrst baseman and Gant was given a Las a on balls putting runners on first and second with two down. "Goulash" Kroupa came through in the pinch and singled cleanly to left scoring McShane with 'what proved the winning run. Aside from the wonderful pitching exhibition of both Morgan and Pinnrr. the real feature of the game was a hair raising catch of a Texas leiguer by Gant In the eighth inning. When tho ball started on a fly for short left field It looked every bit -like it was labeled for a sure two-base hit as Galik was too far out to come any where near making Auto Owners Specials Auto Tops) Rebuilt Upholstery and Seat Covers) Repaired Automobiles painted in any color to look like new. the catch, but Gant took one slant at the ball started on a dead run and with a final lur.ge Just barely managed to reach the ball before it fell on safe territory. It was a fine, piece of work, and a play such as only Kinney Gant could make, j The big crowd certainly appreciated Oant's effort as they were more than liberal in their applause following this spectacular fielding stunt. O'Neil at first base was the fielding star for the. visitors, handling many u'llllcult chances without an error. Twin City outhit their rivals, getting 5 blows to South Chicago's 3. At Toledo BT ROBERT E. HARLOW TSTAFF CORRESPONDENT I. N. SERVICE TOLEDO. O.. Aug. 10 Two hundred and sixty-eight golfers, including all but a handful of the greatest players in the U. S.. and a strong representation from England, started play here today at the Inverness Golf club for the open golf champion of the U. S. In order to get the entire field over the eighteen holts preliminary qualifying round between dawn and sunfcet it was necessary to send the first pair away at 7 o'clock. Starts were to be made after that at four-minutes intervals until after four o'clock. The last pair off the first tee was not expected to reach the home green until after 8 p. m. While the field" is the largest that ever competed, critics here do not look for any upsets. Sixty-four golfers with qualify today and two of the championship proper, which -will be contested Thursday and Friday over 72 holes. When the final round is reached, it is probable the old tavurites will be found fighting for the title. The tournament has international interest, as Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, the English experts, were starters. Vardon played today with Bobby Jones and this pair carried the larg est first day gallery, for the people were eager to see the veteran British master and the most brilliant young Kolfer in America in action. There was no open betting and pool making at the Inverness club, officials having1 taken pains to respect the request of the V . S. Golf Association that pool mking and etting be, prohibited on the club grounds. There was plenty of money in sight at the down town hotels which were fillea with golfers and their backers. The Inverness course was in fine condition for the tournament, many professionals declaring it to be the best championship course they had played over. It is 6,696 yards long. Par is 72. Heavy showers during the night had soaked the course. The sky cleared at dawn and the sun was shining when the first pair got away at 7 o'clock . Last night's rain made fair ways and greens heavy, adding to the advantage obtained by a long straight drive. The greens held high pitch shots where they fellI ::v.;.v:;::::f:::::.:.:.;:::v-; -...;:;.:.; .-.v. v.. . UfcV.V ... v...... i 'ouHTflims bottled; .-- j EYES ScientificaUy Examined Glasses Fitted. in one or tne oest amateur ball games ever played around this region wa sstas:ed Saturday when the Betz team had to travel ten innings before they could put over the only tally of the game. Lynch and Robinhorst were the opposing pitchers and both pitched wonderful ball, with Lynch getting a shade, striking- out thirteen batsmen and only allowing two passes. He was invincible with ien on bases, and the perfect support he received from his teammates featured. Three times the Betz team pulled out of a titfht ?pot when they executed double, plays by some snappy fielding. Both pitchers did not allow a man to reach first base until the fifth inning. It looked tough in the sixth for the Betz team, a double and a sacrifice put a man cm third with one out, but Lynch tightened up and wiffed the r.ext two batters. In the seventh a catch by Chayken stopped the telephone boys. mere was a man on third at that Nme. Then both pitchers tiKhtened down and set the boys down in order, until the last half of the tenth, vith one out Chayken beat out an infi l hit. stole second and came home on V wild throw by Catchi r Segan, which gave the pame to the Betz boys.
