Wills Is McVey's Only Obstacle

The only obstacle In the path of Harry Wills lo tho lop runs of the heavy weight championship ladder is his dusky rial. Sam McWa, who tights ruxt Saturday at Kast Chicago. recognized colored title holder in this division. While the recent conqueror of fret! j Fulton is anxious to meet Jack lh nip-i scy, he probably forgets that he must I dispose of McVca before he can legitimately challenge tilt; white man. It is, a matter of record that McVca decisively trounced Mills in 20 rounds at Tan-! ami some eignt moiuns ago, kiwlioiis h:m down three times in as nuyiy rnuiidf, sixth, eight and fourteenth. George N. Laurence, manager of ileVea, not only challenges Wills, but h wants to make a large sized side bet that his man will be returned victorious over any route. If this isn't enough Law- j n ncu will bet his shure of the purse, i It is up to Paddy Mu'.'.ins. who pilots Wills, to say the word and the match is as good as made. FACING HARD JOB IN STAGING GOLF MEET AT TOLEDO TOLEDO. C. Aug. 5. With the national open championship tournament of he United States tiolf association drawing near, the committee tn charge at Inverness is facirg a perplexing problem in the matter of taking care of the vast gallery that is expected to follow thv noted professionals and amateurs of at least four countries. Harry Vardon and Edward Ray of Kngland are to play a best ball foursome against Charles Lorms and D. K. White, local rj'fessionuls on Sunday afternoon. In addition to that match more tha-i 100 tournament entrants are to practice over the course, according to the committee. The tournament proper is to start Tuesday. More than 200 of the best known golfers of the country are entered. Inverness officials are to use ropes and linesmen, the latter armed with printed signs to keep the crowd back. As little talking or shooting as possible is to be done, the rules provide. As a matter of fact, the officials are relying to large extent on the sportsmanship of Toledo enthusiasts to assist them in keeping perfect order on the course. Mordecal Brown, of three-fingered pitching fame, plans to retire from baseball. After relinquishing the management of the Terre Haute (Ind.) club of the Threo-I league. Brown was deluged with offers, but declined them. The Omaha club of the Western league wanted the former star of the Chicago Nationals as a relief pitcher and co.'.cht
