The words of Senator Harding spoken at Marlon yesterday should be taken deeply into the minds of every American when he said". "The solemn truth is that our part in the world war was un obligation to ourselves performed in sympathy wtih associated, rot allied, powers, and our splendid part in helping win the war was the armed manifestation of American conscience, not the fulfillment of a written obligation. "I do not want Americans of foreign birth making their party alignments on what we mean to do for some nation in the old world. We want them be republicans because cf what we mean to do for the United States of America. Our call is for unison, not rivalling sympathies. Our need is concord, cot the antipathies of long inheritance. "There is another tlibught relating to our domestic concord sc essential to our continued advancement, the Senator added. "It was said the other day the democratic party meant especially to appeal -to the farmers ani wage earners and let America forget the failure cf the world experiment. If Americans can be r-iade to forget the attempted barter of nationality, well and good. It would be better if we could forget. "But when nationalism is surrendered to internationalism little else matters, and all appeal i3 in vain. There is only one other menace, so threatening our tranquility. That menace is the appeal to class in'
determining what our government shall be. I would I
hold myself unworthy cf your confidence if I spoke an appeal to either farmers or wage earners because of their large cumbers. We wish the confidence of all. "Tare isn't any government part in fixing pursuit, profession or employment," Senator Harding also declared. "Perhaps I ought to mcdify that and say except during war. Government did interfere for the world war, and we want to end that Interference. "We want a free America again. We want America free at home and free in the world. We want to silence the outcry of nation against nation, in the fullness of understanding, and we wish to silence the cry of class against class, and strifle party appeal to class ao we may insure tranquility in our own freedom."

roaiU tusit the latter had net been making the money the people had ben led to suppose indeed, that the carriers were in a bad way through having been restricted too clotely in their charges while the cost of tcivice an J mattiials they required was soaring. It lo common sense; tf we are to avoid a collapse cf the
; transportation system, that the carriers cannot -be kept
much in their charges while everything
they have to buy la mounting in price. Of course, this does' not mean that the public will submit ftrever to the "vicious circle" in price-making, but that, until things are stabilised, tha railroads will have to be al
lowed whatever rates are necessary to keep the service oOlng. It will continue to prosperity to put the roads in a condition to buy the rclling stock of which they stand in such dire need. The first essential of prosperity is to get the arteries of trade Into smooth and vigorous working coudlt'on. Nothing would contribute more to bringing clown the prices of necessities than efficient transportation service. CHAEMS OF THE CITY Seme people who worry over the troubles of coming years, that may or may not come, are much alarmed because so few cf the boys who went to war are going back to farms. It is predicted that there will be famine in the land if more food is not produced, la the vicinity of large cities, it is said, not tuore than one in ten of the boys brought up in rural districts hare gone back to the farms after being released frcm military service. There are charms in the city that tho farm does not have. The streets. are alive with humanity, theaters are open day and night, stranger? are coming and going and fetes and festivals are ever changing the shifting scenes, preventing r-tagnr.tiou ami monotony. It i3 good business for the city people to keep things on the mcve, to retain residents and bring more to the industrial centers. Every person making a hoiue in ; city is an asset to the commerce of that city. The commercial spirit seems to hold toe up;w hand on most people, i'nr .no years the work of clt building has been g'-in :u in the United States, at the expense cf the rural dl.-tricts. Now the charmr, o: city life, with municpal light, heat, water ud extensive transportation systems, invite the men and women
from tha farm. It may be a sign of futur losses in j
production and higher prices for consumers, but thf young people of this age are not given to very serious 'thinking alcng the line of economic waste.

RUSSIAN DUPLICITY. The Bolshevik leaders, apparently, are quick to learn. Having been tricked into a ignominous peace at Brest Litovsk by the Germans, they are applying the same tactics in armistice negotiations with the. Poles. Evidence is multiplying that the Reds have no de sire to end hostilitiea with Poland while they are gaining advantages on the battlefield. Without allied aid to Pcland, that country will be under Russ rule in an. other week. But will the Russian Bolshevik leaders stop when they have conquered Poland? This question just now Is giving allied leaders food for serious thought.
LET RATDROADS GIVE SERVICE NOW. Aa the matter of most concern to the public in the railroad wage dispute was the obtaining of more efficient service, the country will look expectantly to the reads to "make good," now that wages have been adjusted and rates have been increased to take care of the railroads' increased expenses. If the right disposition, is shown, toward meeting this demand, there need be no fear cf the" public attitude toward the higher rates. The public was prepared for the advances allowed the carriers by the interstate commerce commission, understanding, naturally, that the Increase In wages granted railroad employes would be passed on to It through Increased freight and passenger rates. - The country has reached the point where, if it can get improved service, IX will not hesitate to pay any rates that can' be shown to be reasonable. . It was paia'fully Impressed during government operation of the
YESTERDAY. Th political orator delights in pointing with pride to the great achievements of the men of yesterday. He lives in the past and dwells upon the memories of the dead. His listeners yawn a little, prop their eyes open with broken matches, or let their heads go a-nodding. Then he changes the Btaging by calling down the anthema3 of somebody on his partisan enemies. That causes the men of today to Bit up and take notice of things not connected with yesterday. There Is something very elusive about yesterday. Yesterday is "not -a word to tie to, la this age of progression, for It win bring disappointment. It matters net what good deeds our fathers performed, nor what wonderful feats they accomplished. The work was done under conditions existing at that time. We do not do things today as did our forefathers. The inventing geniuses have changed the plans, made over the rules and adopted new ideas. They have forced the people of today to get out of the ruts of dreamland and stand on the hilltops cf real life. Forget yesterday.
WHAT THE world would prize most" Is the truth about ' Russia.
AND NOWHERE, probably. Is there more envy of ronzl than In Wall street.
