Many business uieu are ritad from the ground up They have reached a certain point and feel it is their limit, and that thir town also has got all the ad vantages and expansion it can. Others see what other men and other cities have been able to do. They fee! they ecu Id do qually great tiings themselves, and that their hote towns cou'd go on to higher ranges of progress. 'When thy are not working to build up a bigger business, they are forming plans for a better development cf their community. If they get an idea in their heads, instead of wondering why some one else doesn't put it over, they try to enlist support and carry it out themselves. They don't wait until next week or next year, but they go right at it and when that is done they try something else. When a city has a group of business men of that type, you can no more stop its growth and development than you can stop the growth of a young anaj healthy tree, says the Lafajette Journal.
"NEIGHBORS' DAY." Designation of certain days for special observance of one thing or another i3 being carried to the point where such days threaten to become cheap through their numerousness. Not content with single days, ne also are giving whole weeks to the spread of propaganda, such as shipping by truck, to which a week recently was devoted. The call for tie observance of three special days has just been issued by the governor of Mississippi. The thrifty man Baved paper and labcr by putting all three, into a single proclamation. A novelty is offered In "Neighbors' Day," which is set for Saturday, June 12. The governor states that in advocating the celebration of this day he is complying with resolutions adopted by the national conference on community organization, which met In Washington on March 20, last, and was attended by several delegates, representing thirty-three states. Bearing In aiind that "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" is a major commandment, one can find nothing amios in devoting a special day to the promotion cf good will and the community spirit among neighbors. On the contrary, much good can be made to come from such an observance. But It is time to call a halt ou special observances intended principally to serve selfish commercial iu terests. Caution should be exercised in multiplying all these bpecial celebrations lest, because of their frequency, all should tome to be ignored, and the good suffer along with those for which there is no need-
WE'LL SAY ITS HIGH TIME. Lake county justice is being meted out to murder ?ra anil crooks in a most commendable manner. Within a week two brutes, one white and the other black, have been sentenced to the electric, chair. Lake county has long suffred frcm a crime wave and it his', ime that, the law made itself felt. - Michigan fit; Dispatch. And don't forget another to life imprisf -mi. n.mil t-till another to twenty-one years in the pen! ten tlary 1 CAPITALIZING THE 1WN PUMP. It's wise in these brutal days of indictments an., blue sky laws to have some sort of property back ul the oil stocks which are to make Rockefellers of m ill. Di.wn in Kentucky they've capitalized the town pump. The project la described in a serious minded igan of the oil trade as "one of the best jokes o! he yer " Local talent, we read, secured a thirty lay option with renewal privilege of one year on a thirty foot town pump which was recently found to be floating pure gasoline on the water. The we'! ipparently is getting seepage from a nearby garage. Another abandoned well nearby is reported also 'o have contained oil. Indications are that some one has planted both wells to sell stock, says The Nation's Business.
CONSERVATION OF RESOURCES. Reports show that Michigan has wasted four times as much timber as she has manufactured into lumber, and the same indictment could most likely be returned against many ether states In the union that have had rich timber resources in the past. Steps to preserve are usually not taken until the waste has been accomplished. Not only with timber resources does this hold good, but with most other products which nature freely gives. The game laws of most states are far too lux, and in many communities they are not enforced. Civilized man differs from the savage in that he takes thought of posterity and its welfare. The savage thinks only of himself and his Immediate needs. Surely boon can be handed down to future generations than the preservation cf our natural resources ami the privilege of seeing nature's children in their native haunts.
OF COURSE:, the republican party is responsible because woman's suffrage is not a fact. Only 29 republican fctates followed the example of sis democratic Etates In ratifying the amendment.
SHOES AND SEA LIONS. If ea lions are as plentiful in the waters of British Columbia as reports indicate, the recommendation of the premier of the province that they be slaughtered and their skins used for making shce3 is of more than academic interest. Four men who went hunting for them recently killed "00 in two days. There is probably no likelihood that shoes of sea lion leather will come into general use; but as a cheap substitute for footwear of calfskin and cowhide they will find more favor than the wooden shoes which some of the bolder foes of high prices have been advocating. Rut Is there not danger that the British Columbia premier's invitation to slaughter the sea lions may

MEXICANS HAVE a reputation for procrastination but they never put off until tomorrow a revolution that they can carry on today.

MARKSMANSHIP in the Chinese army is mighty poor. A defeated general tried to shoot himse'r and fs'.Ied. THERE IS understood to be a tremendous demand for the strain of Canadian hens that lays eggs rilled with Scotch whiskey.
