THE LOSER THE WINNER. If Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock had crossed the line in the decisive race of the cup contest, Great Brittain would have regained the yachting supremacy of the world loat 0 9 years ago. Twelve times since she. entered' craft against the American defenders and lost. Her visit will do much to revive interest in the sport not only in this country but in Britain also. There is no elation on this side over the Shamrocks visit but it is generally recognized that it will add zest to a contest toward which many Americans had become listh-ss because of the ease with which honors were retained by America. Sir Thomas has proved himself a real sportsman and it is not galling to lcse to him. The Shamrock is important as marking resumption of interest in a competition that takes pre-emlnenc us an agency for cultivating international respect and friendship, as a sporting event it is not nearly so exciting as a dog fight.

IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. The idea of a candidate for vice-president making an acceptance speech is something of a joke. It does not make the slightest difference what he thinks or says. He has nothing to do with the policy of the administration. Not even if the republicans should win and Coolidge should be admitted to the cabinet. would the vice-president's ideas be a matter of much Importance. Coolidge has got to advocate what Harding advocates, and Roosevelt can do nothing but follow Cox. Gary Post. In other words, the vice-president is a joke. If Senator Harding is elected and should be taken by death and Mr. Coolidge should become the nations chief exeutive, his ideas would be of no importance. It would not make the slightest difference what he thought or said. He would simply be a bump on a log. Strange reasoning. As a matter of fact the republican party is providing for contingencies and looking into the future. It is proud to present a man like Coolidge, who may become president. There have been Tice-presidenta who have been jokes, but the republican party wants none of them. That's why Coolidge's speech of acceptance profoundly impresses the people. They waqt

HAPPY COMBINATION. Some republicans demanded a business man for president. Others have insisted that the nominee iiould be a man with congressional experience. Both demands have been met, for Senator Harding made a success building up a publishing business, and has served satisfactorily in both the senate of Ohio and the enate of the United States.
endorsed by most good Americans. It is this: It is fine to Idealize, but it is very practical to ranke sure cur own house is in perfect order before we attempt the miracle of old-world stabilization. Call it the selfishness of nationality if you will, 1 think It an inspiration to patriotic devotion To safeguard America first. To stabilize America first. To prosper America first. To think America first. To exalt America first. To live for and revere America first. We may do more than prove exemplars to the world of enduring, representative democracy where the constitution and its liberties are unshaken. We may go on securely to the destined fulfillment and make a strong and generous contribution, helpful in all suffering and fearless in all conflicts. Let the internationalist dream and the bolshevist destroy. God pity him "for whom no minstrel raptures swell." In the spirit of the republic we proclaim Americanism and aclcaim America. These words came not down from the Fathers, though the full spirit cf them did. They were spoken in a speech delivered in New York by United States Senator Warren G. Harding, of Ohio, a short time prior to his nomination for the presidency. What he says is good stuff to ponder. It will hit every American right where he thinks and will place every fair mind under convictlcn that any American citizen who holds those Views of his country and her national spirit and will
take them with him for gudiance in the presidential I
office can pretty safely be trusted, says the Fort Wayne News.

Sale Begins Tomorrow Morning at 7:30 Tomorrow morning we are goingto give the womenfolk of this community a feast of bargains in NEWARK shoe that will make everyone who participates an advertiser for us for a long time to come. We are going to show you what CAN be done in the way of VALUE-GIVING when the right determination to DO IT is applied. We are going to show you oxfords, pumps, ties and sport shoes at $2.98, for instance, that are as fine $6 and $7 values as could be had this season. And at $3.98 we are going to give you footwear that had every right to bring $8 and $9, just as they did elsewhere. Ladies, this is NOT a reduction sale. It is something GREATER than that. It is a fight to lower high prices. Until low prices prevail again, our business pocketbook will suffer just as your personal pocketbook suffers. We have something to gain in this fight as well as you. If this were simply our usual clearance sale there would be no excuse for slashing our prices as mercilessly as we have. No store or stores could deliberately c the thing we are doing for any length of time and exist. But just as long as we CAN do it we will. Tomorrow we shall bring forth an enormous quantity of this footwear all brand new, regular stock NEWARK shoes, in most all sizes and in a big variety of styles and leathers. This sale is all and more than you hope it is. Come tomorrow and you will go away with the prize bargains of the year.
