TENNIS FOR GARY
Singles Champ In N. W. T. T. . Will Also Get The F. Richard Schaaf Cup
The Nertb-wetrn Indian Tennis tournament -will open at Gary on Saturday. Augujt 7. under the auspices of the Gary Tennis club. The tournament is sanctioned by the United States National Lawn Tennis association, and records established during the week of play will be officially catered hy that organization. The tourney, opening on August 7. ri!l continue for a week, closing- on Saturday. August 14. It is expected that not less than IPO players it ill participate la the sectional championship race. Events carded for the seaaion r men's singles, men's doubles, woraen'a singles, and min's consolation singles. Entries will close on Wednesday. August 4. according to Secretary Homer T. Orsborne, who may be reached at 824 Tyler street in Gary. Entrance fee has been placed at Jl a player for the first event entered, and 75 cents for additional events. No entrees will be accepted unless accompanied by the fee. Balls will be furnished by the tennis club. Trophies announced for the big tournament include the F. Richard Schaaf cup. which will got to ths singles champion. This cup will become the permanent property of the player wttj ning the men's singles event for three years. It Is nut necessary that ththree victories be in succession. This will not be a. challenge cup. the winner being required to play through each annual tournament. Tho Carr trophy, donated by Mrs. Homer J. Carr. heads the list of prizes to be distributed among the women. This cup will be awarded to the tourney winner under the same rulings as are In effect in the men's class. Seven other handsome trophies will b up for the northern Indiana champions. The men's consolation singles trophy cup is an unusually attractive one. as is the prize hung up f or th ; winner in men's doubles. Runners-up win also be awarded prizes of more than ordinary beauty. It is probable that tennis stars or every city of the northern Jndiana dis

Edward's decision yesterday to conduct an investigation into the state boxing commission for its indirect responsibility for tho management of the Wills-Fulton fight at Newark has unvarthed an even more serious reflection upon the board. It has brought out that the commission, by tampering last winter with the original boxing law. caused the repeal of five of its important sections. The sections repealed follow: Requiring boxers to be physically examined before entering ring. Making it a misdemeanor to "scalp" tickets for such shows. forfeiting licenses of clubs that conduct fake bouts. Suspending boxers for participating in fako contests. Penalizing "boxers, seconds, promoters, etc., Vho accept graft.
