Baffling Jewelry Robbery Meyer Berkowitz'Home in Whiting Entered By Thieves Sunday.

The theft was not discovered until yesterday when Mrs. Bennett missed the jewels while cleaning the feed room in which the gems were located. Detectives immediately assigned to the case, failed lo unearth a single clew. From th fact that only th jewels cere taken and that not another thing in the house was touched leads police to believe that th i crime was committed by some on who had knun ledge of where the gems war kept and entered the house for the jewelry alone. The loot consisted of one gold pin set with 27 small 1-3 and S-4 carat diamonds; two diamond' rings; one diamond brooch, and one large cameo pin set around border with 5 pearls. A reward of $350 has been offered for recovery of the gems. Whiting police today refused to comment on the case.

HIT HARD BY COAL SHORTAGE

While the condition at the Gary Works is not as severe the big mill is hadly crippled and the situation at the present time is termed as serious. 11

is said that out of a total of twelve blast furnace five or sia of them are down, effecting practically every department in the plant. In order to save, it is said that several batteries of coke ovens have been shut down and the output of the epen hearths cut considerable. A large number of men were laid off temporarily yesterday and it is said more will be let go today. It 1s almost in-posgible to get an estimate of th ttal number of men that are out of ork as the mill officials are reticient about giving out any authentic information . Production at the American Sfceet xnd Tin Plate is being cut In rrder to Jceep the cogs of the Gary Works in working order. The Gary Works furnishes the American Sheet and Tin Plate Company with their power and In order to keep the big mill operating the substdary plant will be the first to go down, if the curtailment of operation gets that serious. The coal scarcity and the lack of cars to, move out going shipments is the reason of the tut in production It is said. Mill officials are hoping- that the curtailment of production will only be temporary.
