CHURCH FROWNS ON CHANGE. Women married by the Church of England ritual win have to promise to "love, honor and obey," no matter how they live after the ceremony has been completed. The Lower House of Convocation has just had the subject under consideration again and sat down hard on aa attempt to alter the "causes for which matrimony was ordained." It was the Dean of Canterbury who proposed a change to provide for a solemn promise between the contracting pair to "love, honor, comfort and help each other through life." He seems lb have been looking arcund to some purpose, for he 'fortified his motion with an argument to the effect that the tone of the present marriage service does not correspond with the feelings of women nowadays. Notwithstanding which. It was decided that "love, honor and obey" shall stand. Theoretically the old form is the best, perhaps. One may reason that in full consciousness of the vows required to he taken at the marriage altar men and Tomen will be the more particular in choosing their life partners. But there are no grounds for belief that such Is the case. We may believe that the majority do not enter lightly into the matrimonial state; that very few in fact are not convinced thatwith the pronouncing cf the solemn words ct union they have entered Into a contract that only death can bring to a close-. The form of service makes no difference in their assuming of the one or their discharge of tl.e other. Time alone will tell whether they are happily mated or have "engaged in a test o endurance." If their venue proves to he the latter, it makes no difference vaat th vow tal.en it carrot but be Ignore! The 5ean of Canterbury's proposal was not for much of a change In the marriage service, but it shows seme of the dignitaries of the church cf England are waking up. Wnea there Is alteration it will have to correspond in reality with the sentiment of the times.
the first tree come to be? I wonder. Where do the flowers come from, and where do they get their' wondroua fcrrns and gorgeous hues? They tell me that tendency is the sculptor who fashions the butter-cup and the hyacinth. But what is behind endency? I wonder. Where do the trees come from? They tell me from footprints back six thousand years to the dawn of history, back six million years by the record cf the rocks to the rise of order out of chaos, back six billion years by links of logic to the high hour when existence emerged from eternal night, back through myriads of cycles, until Imagination folds its wings and feels worn out In flight, to when from old eternity's unending orb time was cut off and flung beneath the skies; but what is back of eternity? I wonder. Where doe3 Epace come from? The telescope breaks up the milky way and shows us lanes that lead out Into star depths so far removed that light which has been traveling toward our world since time began has not reached us yet. Away off there imagination builds a wall, and says: "This wall Is the boundary of space." But what Is beyond the wall? I wonder. Where does life come from? Wo can watch it, perform it, but we cannot originate life. We can match its processes, but we cannot discover its secret. We can trace life back to a prctoplasmic cell, but what is behind the cell? They speak to us of electrons mere words to cover up ignorance. What Is behind electrons? I wonder. What harnesses electricity to law and law to nature and nature to life and life to conduct and character, and these to civilization, and civilization to the one far-off divine event toward which the whole crea
tion moves? Where does love come from, and reason, and volition, and faith, and hope, and all the rest? I wonder. I cannot keep from wondering. I wonder where things come from, and as I wonder, faith lights its torch.

OPPORTUNITIES IN BURGLARY Light-flpgered gentry of elastic conscience have discovered a new way to make a living without working. An epidemic of robberies has greatly increased the number of fake burglaries where insurance is held, burglary insurance companies report. An automobile, a fur coat cr costly jewels are stolen, the owner reports to the police. The insurance
company ia notified, and usually the claim is paid. If
the investigation becomes too thorough, however, the "stolen" article often niysterioiuMy reappears. The business would seem to offer great opportunities for the ambitious. If the fake "theft" is success
ful, the owner not only gets his insurance money, but
has his property as well. Over arson, for instance, this plan has great advantages, since in the former the owner loses the building.
