AUDITORS ASK CHANGE IN PROPOSED TAX LAV Would Give Decrease Power to County Boards; Resolution is Adopted. INDIANAPOLIS. Ind. July 14. A plan for boards composed of the county auditor, treasurer and assessor in each county to be vestf-d with th? authority to decrease tax valuations in cases in which taxpayers can show that their property was assessed at more than its true value, is suggest-?'! in resolution adopted at a meeting of the legislative committee of the State Association of County Auditors Monday at the Claypoo hotel, of which Ceo. M. Foland of Lake county, is a member. This plan would change a provision of the proposed legislation before the special session of the legislature legalizing the horizontal valuation increases ordered in taxable property ly the state tax board, which was h?U void by the supreme court. It is provided in the proposed bill that persons who believe their property has been assessed at a figure fcijjher than its true value may present their cases to the board of county commissi ners of the county in which they live an-1 the commissioners shall have the authority to decrease the assessed valuation. The members of the auditors' association expressed the belief that this task could be better performed by the auditor, treasurer ar.d assessor of the counties. These three officials are members of th-5 county board of review, which serves as the tax equalization board of each count?, and. because of their work on the board of reyiew. they would be better qualified than the commissioners to consider complaints of taxpayers, it was said. The resolution would have provided that th requested authority be given to the board of review as a whole, except for the fact that this hoard is in session less than two months in the year. The auditors passed a resolution indorsing the present property valuations in counties of the state as provded in the horizontal increases ordered by the state tax board. .
