ties experience. He has been a retlute, aa far as c6atact with the world of affairs is concerned. His occupation as a schoolmaster developed the autocratic spirit. He knew nothing and cared less about the difficult problems that must be solved by the business man who has a pay roll to meet. He has been a theorist cot a practical man of affairs. He knows nothing of the essential art of dealing with other men and taking advantage of their knowledge, their experience and their practical judgment. The Wilson administration has been limited to the capacity of one man hence its man? failures, is wastefulness, its lack of ability to. grasp the multitude of difficult problems that have arisen. Harding is a typical American Wilson is an extremist of the visionary type.

WHAT IT AMOUNTS TOAH straws m the San Francisco gale point to the nomination of the he;r apparent to the Wilsonian dynasty. The timorous democrats feel that unless they name SJcAdoo they haven't a chance in the world and that with him they have a chance. They fear to nominate a man who is not from New York and some one has told them that McAdoo is strong with both the women and with Ubor, and. jhej.; think '.hat settles it. They have been playing their cards with this end in view all the time and McAdoo has played his cards to the same end. It will takp come time to purge the democratic party Cf the Wilson influence. Perhaps it figures by nominating the heir apparent that goal may be all the sooner reached. The wet-dry question was put very pointedly to the democratic platform builders at San Francisco. "The isue before the American people today is whether a 'beer and wine' provision shall be permitted to nullify the eighteenth amendment," declared Wayne B. Wheeler, of the anti-Saloon league. "'In every referndum we have so far on the subject, the verdict of the people has been against such a provision. "Representatives of the people know why they voted against it when it was before congress. The demcratic party cannot stand for the manufacture and use ef wine and beer without favoring nullification cf the eighteenth amendment."It may be said that the constitution or any amendment thereto have yet to be nullified.
MODESTY LACKING An Australian writing on the part America Wok in the war affects to believe that if we take an undue credit to ourselves for the result, and he seems to imply that we do. the fault lies w'ith the policy of the allies. He says that the alUes used the entrance of the United Stales into the war to break down the morale of the Germans by the exaggerated stories they told of the part America would play in the ccnfiiet. The great number of men we would supply, the vast stock of munitions we would furnish, the invincibility of our troops and the inexhaustible resources we possessed were rainted in lurid colors in the belief that some of it would filter into Germany, it did, he admits, and cut no mean figure in shattering the courage of the foe. But then he gets 'Tawther nawsty" and ays that we took for fact what the allies said we were going to do and now think we did it. Of course he fails to explain what would have happened, probably, had not the allies been provided with the weapen which he says they used so advantageously against the Hun morale. If we provided .iust what was needed to win victory, as he. seems to concede, are we blowing our own bcrn unduly when he says "we did it?" Joshua once took Jericho by encircling it with his army and blowing blasts on ramshorn trumpets. Joshua is entitled to credit for the success of his original bit of strategy, but he doubtless would have conceded that it would not have worked had he not had the trumpets wit'i which to affect the morale of. the people of Jer:cho. If America had not entered the war the allies would have been deprived of their trumpets. If we are sorcwhat assertive as to our part we are at most no far in advance of others. We have observed no con spicuous modesty on the part of any factor in the fight.
' MAN OF BUSINESS VS. THEORIST Ther is one marked difference between Senator Harding end President Wilson. Harding began life at hard work cn the farm, undertook the printing of a mail newspaper, performed all kinds of work from turning the press by hand, up to writing the editorials, learned how to make bcth -ends meet financially, so that the pay roll could be liquidated every Saturday night, built up his paper to a daily of high standing Cd influence, served in the state senate, in the lieutencat governorship, and finally in the United States senate. Harding has been a man among men. He has learned in the hard schcol of experience. He has learned to give and take to consult others and weigh their opinions with sound judgment. He is a practical man, not a theorist. Mr. Wilson, on the other hand, has had no busl-
HAPD HORSE TO RIDE. Tneasy dignity is an asset as long as it is maintained; when it is pierced it is likely to be a permanent liability. President Desehanel of France has been known
i as an extremely fastidious man. No wonder, then that
when he waa found wandering down a railroad track clad in his pajamas that the risibilities of the French people were stirred. The miraculous escape of the executive from serious injury when he fell from a railroad car was forgotten in the thought of this precise man in tuch a ludicrous circumstance. False dignity is an easy fcorse to mount, but a hard horse to ride. How many in everyday life find it so. The president of France is not alone in this experience. It is a simple matter to "get up on one's dignity" and a simpler matter to get down.
