We shall be pleased to publish reports on this Bubjecf". and invite replies. As a matter of fact, known of all men who hay been the most meager acquaintance with real etat conditions, the closinc of ihe saloons has not caused an adverse ripple anywhere. On the contrary, it has been a genuine boon, a blessing unalloyed. The ' ost locations have been snapped up at increased rentals, whole buildings have been remodeled to relieve the universal famine in office accommodations, and everywhere the room contributed by the rctirinft saloon or wholesale liquor house has become a constructive asset. AMEBICAOTSM THE ISSTJH EVen attempts of the democratic press to at once paint Harding as an ultra-conservative who would not appeal to the country and a rabid opponent of the Wilsonlaa peace pipe dreams have been so weak and flat as to have no doubt that the republican party has nominated at national ticket that, meets with the hearty approval of .every citizen w ho desires relief from the intolerable conditions which the United States has endured under democratic misrule. Rugged Americanism is a dominating character in Harding's makeup. Many will recall his famous speech cn the night war was declared. The fearlessness of Gorernor Coolidge Is a matter of recent record. With a platform that clearly defines the purposes of the party and candidates who can be trusted to carry out that platform, there is every reason why every republican should be enthusiastic over the prospects fsr the November election, while there are many democrats -rho have seen their party made the plaything of one man who will be glad to get back to a government of. by and for the people. Tbe task this year is to rid the country cf VTilsenism and everything that is tainted with Wilsonism. The chance to accomplish jhU is presented in the republican national ticket and platform. The call gees out to all Americans to all who love AJ&erica and who aspire to keep America alive to Rapport Harding and Coolidge and labor to bring about a triumphant victory at the polls in November.

PSE2ICTI0J7S THAT FAILED. In the old wet days the two ponderous, awescme argnmeats of the rummies and their advocates were that prohibition would work a horrible hardship on labor by throwing the millions of barkeeps, brewey and distillery workers, wagon drivers. etc out of fmployraent: The other was that property values would be ruined If all the saloons were closed. G00D FOR RENSSELAER. We cannot but admire the pride of the Rensselaer Republican. The census bureau released th figures of Rensielaor's population on Wednesday as 2.912. In 1910 the census of the city was 2.3 9 3. showing a gain of ;tM odd souks--that is. it is the r.Oii that is odd not the souls no we don't mean that it was odd the city should gain . 00 well, anyway, did the publisher of the little daily down there propose to let newspapers in cities numbered by tens and hundreds cf thousands get ahead of him? He did not. He just hunted up a new front cf stud horse type announUug in a seven column streamer. "Census Gives City 2.912 Population." "hy angels could not have done more! We congratulate Rensselaer: While other rural cities have lost all over the country, Rensselaer has gained and it has no factories to boast of. either. It has gained despite the fact that a let of its good people have come up to swell the population of Hammond and Gary. It isn't always quantity anyway, iu quality that counts.

DEMOCRACY VS. AMERICANISM. Missouri democrats refused to send Senator James A. Reed to the San Francisco convention. Holding the views tuey do. that is exactly what they should have done. Nevertheless, it was Reed's duty, as a courageous, uncompromising fighter, to submit himself to the decision of his party, and secure that party's endorsement if he could. Reed stands for unadulterated Americanism. The majority of the democrats of ilis--ov.ri. hypnotized by Woodrow Wilson, are advocates of a league of nations a sort of super-government to which they would subordinate America. Senator Reed cculd not be their spokesman, and they very properly rejected him. Thus they have drawn the lines of campaign id Missouri. The democratic organization in that state in thp coming campaign will stand for the doctrine of surrender. The republican party will stand for Americanism and. in order to be true to their principles placing principle above party. Reed and his followers should, and probably will, throw their support to the republican candidates. On minor issues on inconsequential matters a man may and usually should defer to th judgment of the majority of his party members. On a matter as vita! as this, where one group stands for the league covenant without the dotting of an "I" or the crowing of a "t." while the other stands for reservations which will maintain American independence and protect American rights, there can be no compromise.
