THE OLD STORY. Higher meat prices in the near future were predicted yesterday by Everett C. Brown, president i t" the National Liv Stock Exchange at the annual meeting of that organization in Chicago. "I predict that top cattie wi'.: sell at ?20 a hundred by November 1st." he said. "Mutton, however, may drop in price." You notice, do you not, that there is never doubt of it where the consumer is concerned. The prediction says that prices of one WILL go up and the price or th other MAY go down.

DEFERRING CITY HALL QUESTION. Mr. A. Murray Turner, the Hammond banker, id undoubtedly right in recommending to the city council that the question of building a memorial city hall eiiitkt be deferred fur another year at least or until the (juetiioa of amalgamation becomes an absoluu public ikmand. Mr. Turner has always been a powerful advocate of amalgamation and no cue more than he regrets more keenly the fact that Hammond, Hast fhie.igo and Whiting are not a single city -ra action as they are in geography. He believes it will be a setback for amalgamation should a costly city hall be built ia Hammond, when ;u a matter of fact, the geographical center of an amulgamat ie ri coaimuiuty is Kast Chicago. There seems to be a regrettable lack of itu '.ination on the part of the civic officials of the these titles to force the question of amalgamation to an issue. The question has been favorably taken up by big business and banking interests in the several cities, bur the pewder seems to be wet. At. least the git:; won"! tire. These three cities are wasting golden opportunities by refusing to bring amalgamation to an immediate issue. It will have to come some day and it might as well to come now. Our children and children's children are going to stand aghast at our shortsightedness.

WHAT BRYAN THINKS OF THEM. They make fun of Wm. Jeninugs Bryan's perennial freshness as a democratic candidate, but they cannot make fun of his judgment and his astuteness. After the republican convention at Chicago was over, Mr. Bryan reached the following conclusions as to the nominees of the convention and they are worth 'reading: "The candidates are men of ability and will prove acceptable to a large majority of the party. Senator Harding, while entirely pleasing to big busintt.s, cannot be attacked as successfully as Governor Lcwden might hn" v,on The campaign expense scandal di not involve him to anvthing like, the extent that it did General "Wood and Governor Lowrien. He will make a stronger candidate than either the governor of Illinois or the soldier aspirant. "As a campaign crator, Senator Harding will be a great asset to his party. He brings to the parly the best equipnitut in this respect of any candidate in recent years. WOOD GALLANT IN DEFEAT. Mark Sullivan, clever political writer, in summing up observations of the republican convention, says: "Of all the candidates, Wood was the most gallant figure in defeat. t-miies of almost jovial composure in return for condolences. That is what duty and taste call for at such a time and that is what Wood would always do. He is one cf the most completely self-disciplined of living men. Disappointment could easily have been excused in Wood. In any other kind of gathering he should have been the winner. He had the only considerable body of delegates in the convention who 'eaily believed in their candidate, who were loyal to him and stcod by bun to the end. Wood had subsiantiully the same- number of delegates in the last bil'.ot that he had on the first. Among his delegates there was example after example of that kind of loyalty whioii stands to the last ditch. "Wood need have no regrets. His managers need hav no regrets. True, both he and they made many nu-takes. They were bound to make them because of their remoteness from political experience. These was nothing he did and nothing they did that lost him the nomination. It wasn't in the cards and never is in the cards for the republican party to nominate 'so unusual a man. a man whose career has been so far outside of politics as V,"ocd's has been. Wood ends the campaign a gallant and likable figure to millions oi his fellow citizens, and by any standard you choose one of the big men of his generation.
