Answers to last week's questions: 1 Direct short circuiting of a storage battery by the use of wire ir other metal t produce a spark at a terminal i;tthe wrong method commonly us'd in testing a battery. This niethid may crack or buckle the plaes - ithin the battery. Batteries should V - tested with an ammeter for amperme of current and with a hydrometer for specific gravity. 'J -Clearness can be restored to scratched celluloid windows by applying a thin coating of either with a soft i rush if the scratches are light or line. If the scratches are heavy an application of white shellac or var:.ish, put on with a brush, will help 1 store the clearness. The sole idea i: to fill up the scratches with a transparent substance which thus prevents the light from coming through the cut ed.es of the scratches. The compression of a scored-cy

linder will be greatly restored without reboring. if Cake graphite Is fed through the carbureter air valve to the motor while it is in operation. The graphite will fill the scratches on the cylinder walls, resulting in a better compression temporarily. '4 The springs of a car. and particularly an old one, should be cleaned of all rust between the leave, and coated with graphite and grease at the beginning of the season. After five or six-hundred miles the leaves should be greased again by simply prying the leaves apart an dspreading the lubricant over the surface with a knife. Thereafter it is or.!y necessary to apply oil to the friction surfaces of each spring leaf about every 500 miles. Efficiently to remove all rust it is necessary to remove the springs from the car. 5 A cause of a short circuit tn electric wiring, where the wires are not defective, may be soft or porou3 insulation, .J'hen the car is not in motion the defective insulation may not cause any trouble. But. short circuiting is usually the result when the car is in motion because the vibration may cause the wires to touch some metal part. This is difficult

to locate because the short circuiting is spasmodic. 6 Common causes' of blow-outs in tires are: 1. Rotting fabric due to water or oil seaking- through a deep cut. A &harp blow given tie tire by some object encountered on the mad. The result of such a blow may break the inside layer of fabric, which will make the tire bend mure at that ' point'' and finally break the other layers. 3. I'nder-infiation will cause too much friction and heat at the flexing: points .resulting in loosening1 the fabric from the tread. This will eventually crack the fabric and cause a blowout. 4. A rim cut or a nail hole or cut if neglected ill result in rotting. 3. Over-lead inr and over-infllation will strain the fabric and from constant use make it break. T Additional tools valuable outside of the usual set supplied with the car are. a small drill, a hack saw. various sizes of files, two or three sizes of screw drivers. a Stillsen wrench and an assortment of rivets. 2 A good emergency substitute for a burnt out electric fuse is to use several layers of tin foil wrapped about the old fuse. This will provide an adequate connection and will also function like a fuse, in that it will melt in case the current becomes too strong. Two or three layers of light foil are sufficient. 9 Variations of temperature effect the finish of a car because of the difference in coefficients of expansion of the metal body and the finish applied to it. ln A landaulet-limousine ts rlmousine in which the rear part of the top opens.
