well enough to counteract that taint in his children. Some such reason may have actuated him in marrying, though his alliance was central ted before he became king. The Creeks should take pride in tho fact that their monarch had I he good judgment to go outside the limits of royalty in s-eeklng a. wife. It may indicate that he i.- fully cognizant of the weakness of that class. If Alexander tells the army officers to go hence and clings to his wife and throne also he will show seme of the attributes of a real king. If he yields he will demonstrate himself of the common variety.

NO EUTANGUNG ALLIANCES. - No one can say that the republican rarty leaders tried to pass the buck as far as the league, ot naUons pact is concerned. Whatever happens to Senator Johnson, the people cf this country undoubtedly "have bim to thank for the party's position on "en-'-tangling alliances." In company with Senators Boraa Tand McCormick. he stood firm against the league and 3the influence of these men was directed to keeping ;;the strain of Americanism unsullied and unstained. TThe republican party has upheld the traditions cf "the past and its record on alliances with other powers stands unbroken. It may not seem so now but the Hiday is coming when the American people will have reason to be grateful that the 19 2 0 republican con- " vention took the action that it did.

KING ALEXANDER'S MARRIAGE. " The fact recently revealed that King Alexander "of Greece haa a morganatic wife seems to have caused -almost as much of a commotion in his kingdom as -"events connected with the war. It is announced thati "the officers' corps of the Greek army has decided that the monarch shall not be permitted to take his wife to "Athens and an ultimatum is being drafted to the effect -that the king must choose between his wife and the throne. Alexander's father, the deposed king, is al-;-60 reported to be greatly perturbed over the affair an -a family conference is to sit on the matter. T For a member of royalty to marry outside the strain of regal blood is considered an unpardonable sin by those vho pride themselves on rank. While we Tbelieve that there is something in blood and that good Ktrain. tells, it is also true that families run out. The . origin, of kingdom lay in recognition of superior qual--ltles in some chief or leader. Because one representative of a race exhibited true kingly properties of - character it by no means follows that dependents in .many generations will possess the same qualities. Yet that is the basis on which hereditary monarchies are founded. That is an ill-founded principle, as has been :, abundantly demonstrated in Europe. There have been -great men 'who have been kings but they havo been 'rare. There have been vastly greater men who had no claim to royal descent. Intermarriage of the royal families has rendered decadent those who boast the oigiest birth and the longest lineage. It is not aCeexty that Alexander's morganatic wife is nnworthy of high position fcr any reason -other ;ihan she is nor of the "annolnted." Alexander has rlohenzollem blood flowing in his veins. Jt "would be

GENERAL WOOD AT GARY. While addressing the republican convention in putting the name of General Leonard Wood before the delegates. Henry Allen, the great Kanan, han occasion to speak of his fearlessness and his disregard of self and said in part: 'No endeavor of his life presents in truer colors his calm and steady strength than the work at Gary. It was the o!.t quarrel that Uv k him there thee struggle between those who hire and those who toil the only form of civil strife which government still allows to menace a helpless public. He carried to that district the guarantee of fair play. He could have passed the buck. He had been advised not to go fo Gary. He was told the situation was full of dynamite. He could have sent a subordinate, but he went in person and dominated the situation by the tone of absolute justice. ' Not a shot was fired nor a bayonet used. Here, as the twenty years before in Cuba, he gained the confidence of a people in trouble."

PROHIBITION THE LAW. The federal supreme court decision upholding the

national prohibition amendment causes no surprise to

the average individual. It was unbelievable that after the many years of discussion of the subject and the many legal authorities through whose hands the measure passed in the action of congress and the state legislatures through whose hands the measure passed in the action of congress an i the state legislatures

that if there had been anything unconstitutional in the proceedings it would not have been discovered. After a measure stands the tsts of sentiment in threefourth of the legislature cf the country, in addition to that of the federal congress, it can generally be relied upon that it. is constitutional. Particularly on a proposition fought from every conceivable technical standpoint as was prohibition. It follows that as long as it remains in the constitution it will have to be enforced. It can be taken out of the constitution only in the manner 'in which it was put there- by action of congress and the legislatures of three-fourths of the states. What is thought of prohibition does rot enter into the case at this stage. The only thing for consideration is that prohibition is the law and that it must be respected. While there must be no abuses in enforcing it. there also must be no wakn"ss or attempted evasions. There must not be obtained on merit, by regular appeal to the courts and argument in the open. The authorities must enforce the law.

YOU CAN" bet your life and roll that some of the, gentleman who have been "unable to refuse their country's call" to get into the presidential campaign this time will know how to kick it in the faxe suddenly if it ever tries to have fun with them again.
