TERRIFIC BATTLE ON IN EUROPE
BY KR.OK nHIU.TON I. V fable Kdltor I Th battle between the KuFfian r.Mshvik army and the Poles has n acln d a magnitude and ferocity which muk.-.i j it comparable with some of the sri'at j
engagements on tlie WrsU-m freni during the world war. Under the leadership of Oen. Alexis Rruisloff. one of the maMcr .-strategi.-fl s of the old imperial resime in ltu.sc-.ia. the r.oishevik army, strengthened hy enormous levies of reinforeemeuis. is striking violent Mows on the Northern end of the fighting front hetw.-n the T'ripet marshes and the fortress of Pvinsk. on the Pvina river. rrobably 300. ooo men are actively ensa;ed in this territio encounter and the Kussiarts claim the capture of thousands of prisoners and enormous supplies of boot y . This counter offensive, which began la.t Friday, has for its object a drive through the Polish front to l) insk. Vilna and Minsk to compel the Poles to retreat from Kiev and other. tkainian territory they occupied in April and early this month. This is the form of ."trategy with which the public was made familiar during the world war. The Russians are endeavoring to strike towards the southwest in order to get behind the Polish center and compel a general Polish retreat. The Russians claim to have advanced from Sit to 4rt miles over a front of
Polish hat tie line and crossing the strategically important I'.eresma river. The fighting in progress now is raging along the eastern rim of old Russian territory that the Poles quietly occupied in 191!. against the counsel of some of the allied Ht atesmeu . Included in this area of Polish occupation are the great cities of PvinsK,' Vilna and Minsk, which tlw Russians are striving to re-take.
