HAS ENGINE BUT NO PLACE TO PUT IT E. Chicago in Predicament Over Disposal of New Fire Engine. East Chicago now finds itself with a fir engine without a station In whioh to house it, -without men to operate It and -with a possibility of bring without the station and company for a year or more. The engine is - one which was purchased by the city ior use at Calumet where It was proposed to build a new station but like others in the building line the city has other conditions oornbioed with the buildinsr trouble have for the present thrown
tl new building Into the discsrd. The new building for which plans have already been drawn was to have been a bungalow elation for the accommodation of one ermine and a ladder company. The ladder engine Is at present being housed at the Indiana Harbor station, but Is somewhat unavailable for use In ca.se of a. fire at East Chicago because of the long run and the number of railroads which must be crossed. If the company were transferred to a location vlumet it would be available for runs to cither end of the city. When first considered the structure was estimated to cost about SoO.noo but since that time all building costs have increased and it Is now thought that the cost would be nearer 1100,000. In addition to this Increased cost the city authorities have no assurance that the citizens would benefit by the expenditure of the money. Efforts are now being made to discover what effect a new .station would hare upon the fire insurance rates In the city
and If no decrease In rates would resuylt It is felt that the expenditure of J100.000 at this time for a $50,000 building would be unwise. At the present time the extra fir engine , is being housed in the city machine shop back of the East Chicago fire station and is available for use in case of emergency.
