The value of official peace with Germany may not be appreciated by the average citizen, as long as we have actual peace; and yet it is important in the commercial relations of the two countries. President Wilson, however, may veto the peace resolution for the reascn that the plan -was not his plan.

HOME A '-SERVICE STATION." The American home is fast becoming little more more than a "service station," according to a domestically inclined observer of social conditions. He deplores the increasing number of diversions that lure lather and mother and the youngsters from the home evening after evening.' He sees in the growing community idae the death knell cf the long cherished bulwark of the republic. In detail the indictment is sweeping- indeed. In the morning the family eats a hurried breakast, father rushes to the office, mother hurries the children to school, and herself hastens to the bargain sale. Father and mother lunch downtown, but not together; the children lunch at school. In the afternoon mother goes to the club, or the library, or the matinee, and, reaching home sometime after the youngsters have returned from school, prepare3 the evening meal. They eat together, hurry through with the dish washing and then rush to the movie or the theater or the lecture. Sunday they crowd into the motor car and rush out into the country. On the holiday they flee home for the community entertainment at the park or the club house. It is a terrible indictment. The main objection to it is that it is not well founded. Father and mother and the youngsters do not follow any such mad routine day after day. If they did it would pall them and from every inertia they would stay at home o' knights and rest. It Ls to be questioned if the typical American family may not be more truly pictured in the living room in the evening, father with his newspaper, mother with her magazine, the youngsters with their becks and games, and ttie phonograph driving serious thoughts from all of them. Perhaps they go to the movie once a week, to the theater once a month, to a lecture or church entertainment once a fortnight, and "calling" never. The gentle art of iu.er-family visiting has almost "vanished. Where, oh, "where, are the "flinch" clubs cf yesteryear? The dancing clubs? The free exchange of sociabilities? They have been sacrificed to the growing desire of the America, npeople to stay at home, or, when th(y go abroad, to go singly. Indubitably, the motrr car has taken folks frcm their homes to a 'greater degree than before. Hut in doing so it has emphasized rather than shattered the family unit. In the "old days" the community or inter-family picnic was an appealing event of every holl-

This was proved in 191G and has been indicated from time to time since then by the efforts of the industrialized urban masses to upset temperance legislation. Michigan is approaching the day when the motormaking population of Detroit, Flint, Lansing and Jackson will voice the will of the state and candidates for political preference will feel safe in confining their canvasses to those centers. The northern tier of Indiana is becoming industrailized. The growth of South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Hammond, Gary and all the cities cf the northern section, which are tied together with electric and steam lines and motor roads, carries the significance of desires and needs that cannot be met by the methods and standards that sufficed when the agricultural and semi-agricultural mode of life was dominant. The decade that closes with this census marked the beginnings; by 1920. unless a check intervenes, the process will be complete in Ohio, Indiana and will be well advanced in states only touched at this time. JOHNSON'S PREDICTION. "Great Britain will be 'dry' by 1930," says v. E. (Pussyfoot) Johnson, whereat the London newspapers which a few years ago would have greeted such a declaration with hoots of derisive laughter soberly discuss ehe probabilities. This change of front is a most remarkable demonstration of the gain of temperance sentiment in England since the advent of Mr. Johnson, whose mission it is to lead a campaign to rid the nation of strong drink. No such change of front has ever been registered by the press cf England on any great public question. Newspapers that last summer hailed Johnson as a joke now regard him as a factor of tremendojs importance, as they see ra!ling to his colors many of the influential

men and women of the empire.

It does seem as though the prohibition leader has

cut out a hard job for himself in ridding England of strong drink in ten years, but then it was not so long ago that many Americans grinned broadly at the enthusiasts who rallied to the cry, "A Saloonless Naticn in 1920." and lo, we are in the midst of it.
