up the ghost altogether. That Johnson would carry J,ake county waa predicted by this paper a month 'ago and accepted for franted by those who saw how the tide was running. MeCray's victory was equally sure, (especially after Kesler began to bombard Lake county. Kinder, for prosecutor, made a great face and defeated his leading opponents, Thomas and Bremer, two splendid and cleancut men. For the victory of Olds may be ascribed many reasons, the foremost of which that he haa been a faithful deputy and the nest was that in campaign h attended strictly to the canvass of AV. II. Olds. Roso won because he started in the game early, made friends everywhere and kept, eternally at work all over the county.

HIRAM HAS THEM GUESSING. Johnson's race for the presidency is certainly giving the political highbrows reasons to "cratch their puzzled pates these days. Johnson's race in Indiana and California are furnishing discussion over many a. grapefruit. Jchnson seems to have scored the most signal vie tory ever won by him in hia home state or ever seen in a western political scrap. A Knox-Johnson ticket is being talked in Washington in animated fashions among regular" republicans, but the Johnson crowd give the impression that a Johnson Knox ticket might be possible, but never a Knox Johnson one. The mere fact that regulars'" admit Johnson has any kind of a chance, even for second place, is considered as a complete about-face for the old guard of two months ago. However, we have a large sized picture of Hiram Johnson running for second place on any ticket. The Oaliiornian realizes his value aa an advertising medium to the republican party and will not subordinate, himself to any one.

'. ,t bo.

THE PRIMARY AFTERMATH. . In resting an exejit as was the Lake county pri-m;--ry this year, keen analysists of the results fail to fn-! much therein that occasions them surprise. Most of the races returned winners according to the prap'.ii. of sistuue politicians. There wore a number of r.rie-A os thy situations, but the majority of the can

ts r.in true to what th racing man calls the feed-one."

Ii iust not be said however, that many of the can-Iiats were not surprised. They had been lead to belie". f they were in the possession of certain ele-ner.t-' of strength which to their sorrow and distrust they found yesterday morning had not been forthcoming. These men have our sympathy. It is the discouraging anl shameful part of politics that voters will promise their support to whoever asks for it. The candidate is permitted to think that he can get blocks of support here and blocks of support there for his candidacy and deluded by these promises he entirely loses Perspective. That seems to be a part of the present day ioiitica! game, however. If there waa a surprise to the primary it was th-i utter ignoring of it by the democrats. It is the first time in the history of Lake county in the first plice that the democrats had so many places missing on their county ticket and in the second place the paltry vote cast by a rrty whose components are known to be such fighters makes political wiseacres wonder why the democrats lei their tall drag unless they have siven

TOLERANCE. How beautiful is tolerance: That poise of heart that ran appreciate the other's position under any circumstance, that willingly grants others the privilege of seeing and acting their own way, without taking offense because of the difference in attitude. It is net compassed in self-control, which may prevent the outspoken dissaproval. but is more an acquiescence 1o the other's right to think for himself, and live according to Ins own idcals. Tolerance is a great interior growth which begets a steadiness of purpose, develops wonderful friends, is never bitter nor hard. Individuals that Iterance stamps are unusual; are great listeners and observers. The quality is so much appreciated by others that those who have developed the virtue are able to accomplish great good in their circle of influence. They have the ability to sympathize with human kind; they intuitively demand the right to live in their wholesome manner- and are far lass criticized than the average type, inasmuch as they do not place ethers in that position. We know criticism develops criticism. We kjpow anger develops anger. Likewise we know that tolerance develops tolerance. There would be no war nor strife if we as a world people were tolerant in their thought Th? other fellow' i petition would o of the sanv importance to in as our ov n. Conquest? Xo! Deception? No! False ideals? No! Tii-ve would be no occasion for these if tolerance from the heart were practiced.

THOSE NKW YORK robbers who were sentenced to 52 years each will have plenty of time to think it over. The judge who meted that sentence deserves a certificate of honor.
