Joe Graham is a Strong Candidate
Because he is a man four square. Because heh as been on the square with' Labor. Because he has been on the square with Capital. Because he is on the square with his fnenis. Because he is on the square with his enemies. Ralph Bradford and his machine have advertised themselves to be all that is holy and righteous. Joe Graham is no saint. Me is just a human Lclng with all the faults of the average man. But he is no hypocrite, no double crosser and no quitter. "There is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that it ill becomes the most of us to talk about the rest of us." Joe Graham has been asked to show his colors many times, and he has never shown YELLOW7. Joe Graham is not for total prohibition, as it now stands, because it was PUT OVER by a machine. The four and a half million men who were in the Army had no chance to express their wishes in the matter. Joe Graham is for beer and light wines, because beer is a .tonic, a food and a beverage to the working man. Because ihe water in this vicinity is not ;t to drink. Because soft drinks do not appeal io the average taste. The County is sick of reformers who t ike away the liberty that our forefathers fought for, and then turn right around and enjoy their own little pet vices under cover. There is just enough devil in all of us to ward what we can't get. Try to coerce a child and you make a liar out of ln::i. Treat him with common sense and human understanding and he will prove to be a man. Mr. Voter: Let us fie honest with ourselves; let us be on the square; let us use the freedom that is our birthright to express our honest convictions; l-t us have done owith Machine politics. Gary. Ind.. May 2nd. 1920. To my Friends and to the many Civic and Semi-Civic Bodies and Social and other Organizations of Lake County, who have given me assurance of their support in my candidacy for the office of Sheriff. I first wish to express to you one and all my appreciation of and heartfelt gratitude for your cordial goodmil and support and my firm belief that that support will result in my nomination in the Republican primaries tomorrow. Secondly I promise you that if I am chosen Sheriff of this great and growing County, where I have so long lived and that I love, that my administration of that important office will not be tinged or tainted by any act, or failure to act, when any crisis arises that impels to swift and sure discharge of duly, that will bring to you any blush of shame for the support you have so generously accorded. That I will discharge my duty as I see it without fear or favor, and in fine discharge it, solely guided by that simple golden official rule that has governed all my acts in my long years of service in the humbler capacity of Desk Seargent, of the Gary Police Department, viz.: with evenhanded, kindly, just treatment to every creed, class, nationality or color and with charity for all and malice toward none; and, thirdly I wish to say to the voters of Lake County, that I am a Republican and that if in the course of human events some other than I be named at the Republican primaries for the office of Sheriff, he will have no more hearty and earnest support than yours. In all sincerity. JAMES F. DOWLING, Republican Candidate for Nomination for Sheriff.

That is the number on the Republican Ballot for the primaries. May 4th, for Gary's first Deputy Sheriff. Fred M. Stults, who is now asking the voters of Lake County, regardless of party politics, for their utmost support in promoting him to the office of Sheriff of Lake County, after he has faithfully served the people as a Deputy Sheriff for the past seven years and four months. Fred Stults came to Gary to live in 1908, and has ever since been a resident of this city. He has been courteous to everyone, has never intruded on any person's personal liberties, has at no time used the power of his position in any way for personal gain, and from his "mind his own business" attitude has been known to be a Deputy Sheriff by many people in Gary. He was one of the first employees of the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company, and was with that concern as an inspector of construction, and later was put in charge of the building of the concrete houses in the vicinity of the West Side. 'He is a taxpayer, being the' owner of a home in Gary on Ridge Road. Fred Stults has boosted for almost everything in Gary with the exception of "High Rents." He has been fair and impartial in all labor difficulties all over Lake County at all times, putting himself in the same position as the "other fellow" before acting, and he believes that he has as many personal acquaintances as any man in Lake County. He is not seeking this office on the ground that the people of Lake County owe him anything. He has been paid in money for his work, but asks you for your support in promoting him to the position known he seeks after having spent over seven years of his life in becoming qualified for the Sheriff's office. When you go into the polls to vote on Tuesday put yourself in his place he as the voter, you as the man seeking promotion after seven years on a job. What would you want me to do?
