HIRAM JOHNSON'S VISIT. Thoee people who scoffed at these columns a month ago when they said that Senator Hiram Johnson would carry Lake county because of his attitude on the League of Nations charged their tune yesterday when they saw the- trpmendous ovations the Californian received in Hammond and Gary. Nothing like it has been since Bryan t-poke here in his first campaign. The dynamic Westerner is a simon-pure American, whatever bis faults and hi forceful, red-blooded remarks regarding Article X, the infamous clause which sends American boye to fight for what Johnson called the polyglot banners of Europe secured applause that shook the rafters. If Johnson is a radical, be gave no proof of of it in his speeches last night he was just plain everyday American.

moreover, ehould suggest we hesitate until we can feel assured whether the Martians, possibly observing a confusing of earthly conditions which seems to be disconcerting, if not disheartening, are perturbed by any desire whatever to reccgoize or communicate with Ma.

LOOK WHAT HAPPENS. Four hundred school boys in St. Louis have organized an anti-overall society. Tho members are said to be boys whose fathers have been wearing overalls for yttst. Contending that "overall clubs for the most part ara composed of men who can afford better apparel" the trades and labor assembly of Sanducky, Ohio, In

resolution requests the public to ' conserve denim In standard of measurement of

the interest of the laboring man." The workers say preachers hope that the Inter-Church World Movement

WHY DOES INTEREST SAG? The preacher who complains of the size of his congregation or the lack of Christian qualities in his flock cr flocks in general, is comparable in one sense to the

"teacher who becomes irritated oer the attenuated in

terest of hl3 or her pupils and their backwardness in acquiring knowledge. There Is a possibility that neither goes back far enough in the search for causes, and raay be distributing blame inequitably. "The Christian has lost all sense of proportion when be will pay $5,000 for an automobile and give $5 to the world program of Jesus Christ," was tho way a middle west pastor put it in a sermon. From his viewpoint the transactions mentioned may be testimony to support Ms charge of lost perspective, but. what is tb retort, which the condemned may be expected to make which he is quite certain to make? Is it not the difference represents, not necessarily the exact variance in value between one' and the other, but the

'alue difference as it appears to the man in the pew?

Reversing the conditions to suppose the man in the pew giving $5,000 for the program of Curist and $5 for an automobile, if automobiles could be bou; t for that, would It not represent the Btrength of the appeal which reached him? May the imagination be criticised for hearing the man In the pew defend himself by saying that when the relativity is changed, when his interest is aroused and maintained as much in one as the other, there will be no difference, la the sturdiness of his support?

If the ratio of $5,000 to $3 remains, is it to be the

interest ,or will the

that since the formation of overall clubs the price has

advanced from $.".50 to $7.00. The freak and tool craze as this paper predicted has proved a Boomerang .with the wearer who has real use for overalls, paying th price. We doubt i? cnehaif of the people who started to wear overalls becausa they take up with every fool thing that conies along, are wearing them today.

SIGNALLING TO MARS. The planet Mars makes one of its nearest approaches to the earth this month, when the distance betweeu us will be about 55,000.000 miles. Taking advantage of this reduction of the intervening space, a college

in arousing a new sense of Christian obligation that will destroy the ratio complained of?

A NEW FRENCH gun is said to have a range of 100 to 120 miies. Evidently not a-son of a gun. but the daddy of them all.

IF SOME FOLKS spent less time speculating about how to get to Mars and spent mere time trying to learn what are the immediate everyday needs on this old earth we would all be a lot happier.

A TOOTH-PULLING craze ia said to prevail. Some people must have an odd idea of pleasure.

JOE GRAHAM WANTS TO KNOW

Mr. Voter: Is the Primary a farce"? Do a!l the candidates for Sheriff have an equal chance, or is tins election SET for the Machine candidate?

Open your eyes. Mr. Voter; uk yourself why the machine docs not in- j

dorse the candidacy of a man who has fhown himself to be without fear or favor in the conduct of a public olfice by rendering impartial justice to employer and employee alike, and who cannot be made the tool of any interest, big or little. The first gun fired by the enemy was the scurrilous attack made on me by the State Board of Accounts, nd which was based solely upon the opinion of a couple of fVId Examines. When this matter was referred to the Attorney General of thr- State it was repudiated by him and characterized as a piece of dirty politic?. He upheld the way in which my office had at all times( been conducted, and his remarks to me were that "There is no one better qualified to pass judgment on whether or not an inquest should be held on a body than the Coroner, who is elected by the people for that purpose, and only the Coroner should pass judgment on which bodies should be posted." There is an organization in this county strongly opposed to any exservice man as a candidate for public office. A Machine candidate for county office has remarked in nearly every town in Lake County that "Every ex-?ervice man from the President to the loucst office jceker will be beaten in the May Primary." I do not believe lh.it a man should run for oihee on his military record, but on the other hand his senfce to his country should not be a detriment to him. Joe Graham is not running on his military record, but he is might

i proud to hae worn the uniform of Uncle Sam. and if he had to choos

PLATFORM OF L. Bryce Whitaker Candidate for Republican Nomination for Sheriff of Lake County To the Voters of Lake County : Not being the machine candidate and not being $ponsored by those who claim to have thousands of votes which they can deliver by the nod of their heads, it is necessary that I appeal directly to you. MY PLATFORM: I promise to adhere to a program of strict economy in conducting the sheriff's office, a program, however, that will be consistent with the growth of the county. I promise that in case of labor disputes that I will use all endeavors to bring about arbitration, for well do I know that Liberty bonds 2nd union cards are in the same pocket. Well do I know that it is cheap Americanism that calk every striker a bolshevik. I promise that I will resist to the outmost the calling of state or federal troops into Lake county until it is morally certain that the local authorities have used every resource within their power to preserve law and order. I promise that the sheriff's office will not be autocratic and that the deputies named by me shall net be officious nor act beyond their authority, and that the weak and the strong shall be on an equality. I promise that if I am defeated in the primaries that I will work for the election of any of the splendid men nowopposing me.
