Da rid lea ring th White Hou- Their 'thank President Wilson for IsfU- j injj n order duririfr the war which permitted them to retain their i lass in which tho city still remains. In 1910 Kast (Tilt-ago had only a few industries and practically all of the commercial trado of tho city -went to Hammond. Now the Industrial section of Ui Twin Cities is the largest in the. state with the exception of Indianapolis and wjth its nearly a million dollar a week j-ayroll is second only to the capital city. East Chicago, as city, ts stH! suffering from a lack of large merchandising interests, although indications point to a growth of these interests during the next year, and is handicapped severely because of the lack of housing conditions which compel th men employed In the "plants of the city to look for homes in other cities. Estimates of plant and city officials and census officials show that about ten thousand men who work in the Twin Cities are living in the sourrounding cities and it is, the belief that at lejit a half of these men would live in tho Twin Cities if homes were available. These men with their families would increase the population by at least, fifteen thousand and would place East Chicago far above Hammond. Efforts are now being made to accomplish this. Citizens of the Twin Cities are pointing with prid to the growth of th last ten years and are predicting that th potential population of the Twin Cities will soon become a reality and will place East Ohitago at the next census as a clOFe competitor of Gary for honors of Ivke ceunty.
