Roald Amundsen and map showing approximate route followed by him and his party. The safe arrival at Anadir, Siteria, of Captain Roald Araund, Ben, discoverer of the South Pole and noted explorer, is reported from Nome, Alaska, following the receipt of a wireless message from Anadir. Captain Amundsen was last seen in September, 1918, when his ship the Maud, took on oil at ' I:xson Island in the White Sea. It as the explorer's intention to drive the ship as far northward as Possible and allow it to become frozen in the ice in the hope that the floes would carry the vessel across the Arctic Sea and near the North Pole. There is some uncer

tain. y as to the exact points reached by Amundsen in Siberia. Anadir is the name of a river, not a town. It is believed that the explorer may have landed on the rorthern coast of Siberia, makinjr his way overland to a Russian trading post. In the course of his voyage Amundsen covered 3,600 rniles. The purpose of the expedition was not to visit the North Pole, but to make scientific investigations. It is considered possible tnat Amundsen crossed part of the Arctic retrions in an airplane with which he was equipped. lie was
