ed with life or liberty of soldlera. It ! urged the courts must have member of leal experience and be composed of raw-era of at least two years' experieno. Defendants may have counsel, military or clTlllan, of their own selection. Verdicts of acquittal may not be sot aside. Punishments may not be heavier than under clrtl procedure. The are a few of the rules which so widely commend theuiBelves as fair that the only wonder Is that the army system has denied such obvious rights. The Ansell-Crowder dispute was one cf the deplorable post-war muddles of which the people have tired, nut It hs been profitable by arouslm the nation to the militaristic and autocratic tone ot our army courts and the reed for humanizing and democratixlng them. The army of a democracy should be democratic Nothing Is so subversive of either discipline or loyalty as a sense of oppression and Injustice, and it has been c learly evidenced that many- of our army courts during the war were stupid and archaic, If cot downright unjust. While such conditions prevail the army service coul. 1 command neither the enthusiasm nor the respect of many potential soldiers. That these evils are In the iuand should be stimulating to recruiting as -well as gratifying to the public generally.

GE2JX&AL WOOD HEEE TOMORROW. Gen. Ieonard Wood, one of America" most distinguished men and a personal frion.l of the immortal Roosevelt, will visit Lake county t( morrow as a candidata for presidential honors and we bespeak for him a hearty welccmo as a national celebrity and a man. Gen. "Wood is not a stranger to the Calumet region. He waa a familiar figure during the Gary strike and he thinks enough of this locality to have a reputation which 'no other presidential candidate on any ticket has- that of owning property in this locality which is a matter of record. Gen. Wcod will speak at East Chicago, Gary and Hammond and deserves the careful attention and consideration of every voter in the five cities. The man who will not coma out and hear why or why not a presidential candidate should be- nominated Is a poor stick of a citizen. Gen. "Wcod Is asking you for your -vote, lie ia addressing large throngs over the country telling the voters why he should cast that vote for Wooi for president. "Were Gen. Wood here on Jdst a plain mission, his services to his country not. only in military, but la civilian matters, would entit him to big throngs, how much more when he is a candidate for the highest honor the country can give does he deserve a splendid reception and enthusiastic welcome. - HTJMAJTIZIJrG ARMY COURTS, ir enacted by congress, recommendations of the senate military committee for changes in the army courtsmartiaJ system should go far toward re-establishing confidence in the democracy of our armed establishment. This confidence is imperatively needed now, when a great recruiting campaign ia under way and efforts are being made to attract thousands of veterans back to the service. Specific suggestions of the committee appeal to common sense. Death sentences must be made by a threefourths instead of a two-thirds vct9 of th5 courts, if tha program 13 endorsed. To avert the possibility of green officers weighted down by ?if-!mportanee being Intrnst-

Indianapolis News. What about 1912, when Marion county went democratic and only by the big majority that Lake county gave Taft was the entire state prevented from going democratic? Where was Marion county that year? The fact is Indiana i3 no longer dependant on Marion; she looks to Lake county now.
