THE POOR OLD WORLD. The proneness cf. some individuals to interpret every "mysterious sign" as forecasting the end of the world is shown again by a woman in Michigan aud a nunAer 'of her neighbors. The woman in question claims that one of her hens laid an egg on which was the inscription: "The Knd Will Come After Five Ifays." Instantly it was assumed by the owner of the ben that the latter was giving warning that the end of the' world was at hand. While it is contended by some that the inscription looks to be the work of some joker clever with a knife, suppose that the egg were so marked when laid. Why jump to the conclusion that the inscription, if it rneaqs anything, refers to the world? Think of the ccuntless ether things to which it might refer: Why was it not
assumed that the message had something to do with the
hen herself? Maybe, disgusted with her inability to bring down the high cost of living by iudustrious laying she has made up her mind to lay off work and let things go to the bow-wews. if nothing else will do. Again, the inscription might forecast the blowing up of another campaign oom. Indeed, this puzzle 'of the egg is as nothing to the perplexities given to some of the politicians by the Michigan primaries. It all recalls the "mysterious letters" a farm laborer claimed to have seen cne hot summer day. He reported to his employer that "G. O. P." had risen suddenly before him. His interpretation was "Go Preach Christ.' Fut his employer ruled that it meant nothing of the kind. "Go plow corn" was his version and he sent the hired man scurrying to obey the sign. So let the Michigan woman read something sensible into the inscription that is bothering her. m RATES FOR MONEY GOING UP. T'ncle Sam'e offerings of short-term securities make an appeal of their own which insures their helng absorbed with virtually no apparent reluctance on the part of financial institutions and the interests which they can influence. It is more than significant, then, that Secreary of the Treasury Houston has decided that the three and six-mouth certificates cf indebtedness
STRANGE AS FICTION. That "truth Is stranger than fiction" is no better established than that f.rtion may be equally surprising oi thrilling when masquerading 'as truth. Cliief !)-tective-Inspertor John Willis of the London police department figures as the narrator of a story of a type which was met frequently a few years ago to corroborate theories on heredity. That detracts nothing from the charm of the inspector's account, given for the rirst time, and taken from the police records. Briefly, the chief inspector some time ngo was making a close and exhaustive search fof a clever forger concerned in some extensive frauds, and the trail led him into a small village in the interior of England. On the outskirts of the town he met an old man. who is an educated gentleman, polished in conversation, and ODe of the little community's most respected residents. Rut something he said gave the inspector a clew to his identity as a lawbreaker of several years ago, whose misdeeds had been forgotten by all save the police authorities, who had long since abandoned hunt for him. so thoroughly had he disappeared. Inspector Willis passed him up for the "mystery criminal" he was trailing, whrm he finally' captured. Tde surprise of the story is that the "mystery man" turns out to be the son of the white-hatred patriarch, long since dedicated to small town respectability. The "mystery criminals" brothers and sisters all stand high in the community, occupy excellent social positions and, like the father, are well educated. The prisoner was the only one showing any criminal strain and he, tco. like the father and the others of the family, is a man of education, gentle rnenly in appearance and manners.
