WHEN WILL THEY FLY THE AMERICAN FALG? According to United States 'Commerce Reports, cae new development in trans-Pacific steamship service is the inauguration of a regular run between Dalren, Japan, and Seattle. This will be a monthly round trip service. Assurance of the establishment of this regular service is pleading news, but it would be far more pleasing if the information wre to the effect that the new spjanohip service wouM be under the flat; of the United Siaies rather than the f.ag of .Japan. This particular ocean route may be of small significance, but one route here and another there, connecting American ports with important ports in other nations of the earth, are what make up a merchant marine system. It matters much whether America shall control enough cf these trans-oceanic routes to form a complete merchant marine system under the American flag. Each incident such as that reported by the commerce department serves to emphasise the necessity for vigorous efforts on the part of the United Slates to establish permanent ocean lines to all parts of the world and to formulate and adopt n plan of merchant marine maintenance which will assure the permanency of all these routes.

America must listen. Although we have no active part in framing the peace with Turkey, self-interest, as well as Christian impulse, recommends that we make our voice heard. The demoralisation of foreign exchange brings Into view angles which attiait pfpuhi" attention tn Knvope more than the matter of i;n;ons of finis ainl industrial supplies from America, because the Inner are fa: t her away from th' horizon line id' the continental public. The differences in a hie in the m -eacy of different contiguous countries is ;l robl -in in miecr speculation which is labored over with ail the frenzy that attaches to adventurm:- fortune hunting. RADICAL LABOR WILL EE ANSWERED. Radical labor leaders have asserted their determination to carry their policies to the polls at the national election. They will find that the great majority of unicn men do not approve of their course. The sur stantial. home-owning, family-sustai aing . members of local labor unions in the smaller cities are out of sympathy with tbe radicalism of the leaders who thrive upon the subservience of Irresponsible, unattached, thriftless, bolshevistic members of the large cities. Radicalism can appeal successfully to the Ignorant and irresponsible. The thoughtful, industrious, law-abiding member of a labor union who gives a.n honest day's work for an honest day's pay, will cast his own ballot without dictation from -walking delegates. The votes la November will attest the truth of this prediction.
THE , PEOPLE NOT ASLEEP. The universal cry that has gone up throughout the United States and England In protest against knifing cf the Armenians and continuance of Ottoman power In Constantinople as features of the peace treaty with Turkey are splendid evidence that the peoples of the uorli'l are awake. International political jugglers may wfl! take warning. Though the people may be long fuffnring and slow to wrath, their temper now is brittle. They have not taste fcr a settlement in the Near Fast th..r will continue the Injustices so prolific of war throughout the years. Lord Robert Cecil is conducting a spirited campaign in Great P.ritaln against permitting the sultan to remain at the port, demanding that the peacemakers shall be ruled by justice instead of by fear. In this country the American Committee for the Independence of Armenia Is effectively stirring resentment against the proposed dismemberment of Armenia and its distribution between France, the Kurds and the Turke. The names of the distinguished men who comprise the everutive committee leave no room to question its in-
THE FLOUR SURPLUS. American consumers of Hour win he ii . (-,- ; j;i the statement of the America n U A In.nt :.- t ra .;i that the United States has remaining from last .-,rV harvest a sutpius of 6o.rtnO.ioVi barrel-; of flour that cannot be sold for cash in K.irone. I: i , therefore, urged that the government arrange to sell cn c-oiit 1 0. o'o. 'K01 ban els. now held by the government grain corporation, for distribution nmong the peoples of Central and Fastern Furope, Austria.. Hungary, Poland. Bohemia and Armenia. The grain corporation reports a profit of $50,000,000 on flour exported, and it has b en proposed that this profit might be applied in such relief. It must startle the average citizen and hou.-e-l.eeper, knowing the phenomenal prices for Hour and bread, to learn that while American people a.e paying outrageously high prices for the staff of life . surp'u.s of 60,000,000 barrels is virtually going Legging.
ODD ROAD TO THRIFT. Furs, silks and laces show thrift, says a Chicago manufacturer (probably of furs, silks or lacesl. Yet his theory is not so far-fetched as old-fashioned people might think. His idea is that the y.,ung woman who wants the so-called extravagant, items of dress, stub as silk underwear, silk hos.- and furs srarts to save to get them. Thereby, he argues, she gets the saving habit and after her wardrobe Is complete she fceps on saving and the money then gees into th savings bank. The most extravagantly dressed girls in his factory. h sas. have tbe most money in the bank. If it can be figured that a young woman with a
U'aste for furs, silks and silk hose can reach the point
of contentment where she has no further wmus in that line it Is possible that she may continue the saving habit Che has thus acquired, unless she finds some other avenue of expenditure. Hut on the main principle that one ha to save to get what, one wants the Chicagoan is, of course, unassai'ably right. The road to thrift, whether the goal l.n furs, silks, laces, a savings account or what not starts the same way self-denial in other things in order to get the greater desire.
