OUR CHANGING STANDARDS. j In the vast confusion, begotten of the social unrest j and industrial uncertainties occasioned by the world j war upheaval, there has come to pass a persona! and j mental discrder lhat is diseemable in the iax regard J we have for the old standards of thought and action, j Those old laws that once were respected as the very j foundations cf our civilization have been shaken out of place. It may be safely assumed that the American j people were never so universally stirred and confuse, 1 bv the multiplication of theories, doctrines and half j
baked ideas on every subject under the sun, than has been the case during the sixteen months during which we have passed since the close of the war. It is as if some mighty hand had taken the nation by the scruff of th neck and shaken from it much of the old conservatism which was once our pride and upon which rested so much of our confidence in the
future rermanence of the country. The land is full of I
prophets of both good and evil. Theories as to every human activity are promulgated on every side with a wildness and abandon that are startling. The constitution, which has been the bulwark cf our civil and political faith through all these years, is undergoing an expansion which presages vast possibilities for the future.
RECRUITS AND POSTERS. All other kinds of experts are on the sovernment payroll, but the advertising expert seems to have been left out of consideration in the matter of getting up enlistment posters, according to the Home Sectcr. which comments as follows: "The average recruit is a former service, man. When he. sees the slogan: "Join the army and see the world.- he remembers that the world is made up largely of muddy kilometres. When he hears ".Join the army and save your money.' he remembers his meetings with the paymaster and the fact that there is not the difference there might be between the morning bef.-ro and the morning after 'pay day. An.l w lieu he sees a fetching poster depicting a buck clad in an immaculate Sears-Uoebuck uniform shatting familiarly with a colonel. h M.'ci!is that in the real thing lie had to g,t the top's permission to speak to the skipper. "It is high time that the recruiters substituted concrete facts for the peaceful paradise they have blazoned on the posters from tim immemorial. Talms waving over a tropical scene wherein Genera! Dub is pouring tea for Private I-'lub make a pretty picture, but they don't get the w ise ones." It is a matter that has been commented on at various times by advertising men. Advertising and truth are closer together than ever before.

ment to include woman suffrage, are larger manifestations of the shifting of thought that is abroad in the land. These are subjects on which exists a diversity of opinion, but they may be regarded as actual crystalization of the purpose of the American people to move out cf the pat into a new and untried future, and the ultimate wisdom of unwisdom of their adoption is yet to lip determined. The intent behind both prohibition and woman suffrage is unassailable, and the results ;re already establishing their great value. It Is when we come to Individual thought and conduct, as suggested by the disregard of old standards and the reckless establishment of new unbaked rule?, born of the moment, that one is conscious of a sense of danger and of loss. In the religious world the old doctrines are losing their vital force. The church is in the throes of a readjustment, and whether it will abide by the old standards or also seek new and broader paths is still a question. Our fathers preached and lived a stern gospel. Hell and sin were rerl entities in the lives of the saved
"Wild Ducks Are Here and Spring Is Near, maybe." So reads the newspaper headline. The eldest inhabitant who saw the ducks, declares positively that wild ducks know all about the future of the weather conditions and he swears spring must be at our door or the ducks wouldn't be this far north.
