INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE! WASIUNUTON, Kct. 5 Knnminu.' withdrawals of whiskey from bonded warehouses by alleged "flavoring extract" ami "hair tonic" manufacturers upon surh a scale that it may reach the proportions of a scandal, has led to a probe by Prohibition Commits oner Crane as to the validity of thousands of permits already granted by the bureau. The outcome of tha investigation probably will be the revocation of large numbers of permit sissued by var lous collectors to embryo estabishments that have sprung up since nnionai prohibition went into effect. Some
of these establishments, with lurid sign j
and stationery "have been able to put one over" on the enforcement officers by various methods of evasions. Most of the places being probed are said to be factories In name only anl exist only as a means through which the prohibited alcohol can be secured. Piscovery of "riiiRs" of bootleggers In New York Cit. Philadelphia. Pittsburgh. Chicago, Baltimore, St. Louis. 'incinnati and a score of other cities of smaller sizes rlevloped well organized plots to obtain liquor by fraudulent means. In scores of cases onw being investigated It is probable that large bonds put up by so-called "manufacturers" as a guarantee of good faith will be automatically forfeited. Making ot false affidavits is covered by other penalties, including imprisonment.
