CAR THIEVES AND RAILROAD POLICE USE GUNS FREELY

A revolver tight between three car thieves and two special agents of th Indiana Harbor Belt Kail road last riiiht furnished the excitement for residents of Calumet in East Chicago. The battle came, when the two special agents attempted to arrest five men who hud been caught in the acr of taking merchandise from a box car in the Indiana Harbor licit yards. luckily no one was hit by any of the several bullets which were fired. East Chicago police were notified of the battle by thu agent of the South yhore about 11 o'clock Rnd Officers O'Xell. Trtanj and Muha arrived at the, battleground in time to assist in the arrest. John K. Spencer and Joseph Vlandowski ar the two agent who carried on the battle and came out victors. Th merchandise which was stolen consisted of raisins, milk and soap. The police are investigating the cas further on the supposition that the raisins were taken for use in making "white mule" and an effort will be made to locate a still on the property of the prisoners or of their friends. Milan Polek. 4S19 Carey St.. says that he was invited to take articles form tho car by tho other men and thst the car was already opened before they arrived. The prisoners claim that they did not break Into the ear. but that it was open when it was switched Into the yard. The ct comes tinder the fedenl court jurisdiction if the railroad officials wish to prosecute under the interstate shipment violations, but it is probable that the case will be. settled in the city court if the men are willing to plead guilty. The men who were nrrest in addition to Milan PoUk are. Steve Tenich. 1S15 Carey St.; CcorKe Supnik. 4815 Carey St.; f;tee Ma.hanevich. 4S19 Carey st., and John Tenich. 4S15 Carey st.
