ABOUT TIME. The- prtca of shoes is not to be Increased to the rwuiler during the next five months, according to representatives of New York manufacturers and wholesalers. It is about time they were coming out wtt,h a statement like that. When hundreds of thousands of pairs of women's shoes of the fancy styles worn only in the United States can be advertised for export we fail to see how further increases can be explained on the basis of scarcity. The wholesalers say prices will not be decreased. That would be heresy. But no further increases will be made. The first thing you know you'll be able to buy a pair of shoes without listening to a iecture on economics by the sales person.
valuable service in calling the attention of the public to the unworthy character of America's foremost representative of the pugilistic game, and now that this has been made kuown the abuses and outlawries Incident to the game itself should be exposed and put down. uine service. Fort Wayne News. ENGLISH SPARROW POTPIE. How to get rid of the troublesome Knglish sparrow i one of the problems that vex the officials of Menominee. Mich., and they are trying to solve it by offering a bounty of two cents per bird. That plan brings results, but It is cruel because- many crippled birds escape, to suffer and die. There are people in this vicinity who tan show a far better way, one that will save the bounty and lend some aid In the solution of the high cost of living. It is to catch them in traps and eat them. It has been done many times around here. It Js being done this winter and sparrow potpies are being served that are toothsome and dainty. All that' is required is a large m oven wire trap, with spring wire openings, a trail of food leading up to the door of the trap, a display of much food within; then wait and watch the greedy little things fight to get in. Usually they are plump, for they are great hunters and find much food, though apparently never satisfied. It is somewhat tedious to pick and clean them, but it. can be done and many of them may be put in a potpie. There are no great, quantities of meat on their frames, but what is there fully pays for the time and trouble of getting them and making the pie.
THE SENATE'S BUSINESS. The more the proposal to submit the peace treaty to popular vote is considered, the more of an absurdity It seems. A wise decision could nrt. be obtained in that way. The senators, most of whom are qualified to consider the Intricate questions Involved, have studied and talked about the various important provisions of the treaty for months and they are still unsettled in their minds. The average man Is wholly incompetent to consider intelligently the specific points raised in this great International agreement, even If he could take the time from his regular pursuits. The theory of representative government Is that the voters elect representatives whom they trust to study and decide uqestions of satesman3hip for them. We are not ready yet to discard that theory as unsound or unwise, it is clearly the senate's business to act upon the treaty, each senator accepting the responsibility to his constituency for his vot, and there seems to he some real hope now that the period of preliminary wrangling is about over.
AMERONGEN OR WASHINGTON? "What, hoi Call out the guard." we can imagine the lusty secret service, sleuths shouting when the bold photographers who tried to get a snap shot at President Wilson were discovered burrowed inside a load of hay driven by the White House while the president was on the lawn In his wheel chair. This assuredly is what the guards at. Amerongen would have bellowed had they discovered the men who got pictures of the Kaiser by the same method, says the Detroit Journal. We are told that the enterprising culprits who assayed the strategic venture at the White House were permitted to escape arrest and confinement "after they had convinced the officers that they had not had time to make pictures." If there is an authority on the vagaries of secret service sleuths within ear-shot, we would like to ask, since when did it become a crime
1 to photograph the president?
Also, when did the door of the White House, which Wilson propped open for the convenience of the forces' of pitiless publicity, bang shut? Again, who emancipated the president from a responsibility which was one of the chief duties of some of his predecessors the obligation to stand meekly and dutifully to be photographed at any time, in any place and in any light? Lastly, how long have the American people been granting their Chief Executive the exclusive seclusion of a dethroned War Lord?

A DISGRACE. It la not improbable that the general denunciation of Jack Dempsey by the Ioyal Legion as a slacker and an uadesirable will have the effect of curbing a game that is fast passing beyond all bounds of reason. It is no secret that the. promoters of championship prize fights hva made immense profits of these exhibitions and that the fighters themselves, usually men of a physical courage as low as they are Intellectually mean, have taken grossly swollen returns for the effort put forth. We complain bitterly of the business man who by venturing his fortune and devoting himself strenuously for years 'o some end finally "makes a killing," yet we accept as a matter of court the sudden acquisition of a fortune by some low-browed thug who through a clever manipulation of the-sport!ng editors of the country manages to entar the ring touted as a "world beater." And eren In instances where the brute simply "lays down." there is no particular disposition to withhold from him the fortune that comes to him without effort and without merit. There Is that about It which is so grotesquely unfair, so out of ai' consonance with reason, and so thoroughly a reflection on the good sense and dignity of 1 he American people, that drastic action should be inoked ai once The American Legion has performed a J jjw! . itiiLjai'.
WELL, the grand old flr horses are going the way of all flesh and now we see the dear old snorting steam fire engine is to be abolished and the time s?mj to b at hand when a disastrous conflagration won't be any fun at all.
THE longer, slimmer models are often extremely beautiful and attractive but there is something very cute about a close-coupled girl.
NO one ever feels broader-minded than a Republican party organ when it says something pleasant about Thomas Jefferson.
DR. NTCHOLA3 MURRAY BUTLER says governmental administration by business methods is imperative but we're afraid it's too revolutionary.
MAYBE the Democrats hope that by holding their convention on the West Coast it will-be more Pacific than their meetings usually are. RUSSIAN Bolshevists want to make peace with the western world. They havo gone about at far 33 they can on an empty stomach. THE surest indication of the decline in big world nws is the fact that the murder cass are beginning to creep back into the newspapers once more.
