Thb Times today publishes the second of a series of questions and answers for the motorist. One set of question will bo ayked ach wck and answered th nut. The answers will be compU.-te so that the reader tun readily understand what the question the week before was. The questions, which wcr prepared by an expert, are of practical and educational value for the averajjo motorist. ! AKSWEM TO LAST WEEK'S j QUESTIONS. I 1. The cause of excessive smoking: and rapid carbonization of a motor with rood compression la the use of too much oil In the crank casa or the use of the wrong lirad of oil. This latter is usually cauaed when too Hjcht oil is used. 2. To make pear shifting easy And noiseleK the change from low to second sped should be made when the car is poinr Are or six miles per hour. The ppeed varies with the make of car when shiftinr from second to high, the averag teinc from ten to fifteen miles per hour. This same applies when Fhifting from high back into second. 3. A good and easily made body polish is composed of one-half gallon turpentine, one-half pint of paraffin oil. jne and three-quarter ounces of citronclla oil and three-quarters of an cunce uf oil of cedar. 4. A. semi-floating- axle is one on which the entire weight of tho car comes .'n tho axle .shafts which sp; also depended upon to transmit the power from llie differential. The three-quarter-fioat-ing axle is one in which the axle shaft is subject only to torsional strains due to tho power applied to drive the cur. The full floating: style of axle is one in which the housing takes the full weight of the car and the axle is protected with, in it. thus the axle has nothing to do but apply the power.
5. The solution in a storage battery will not freeze until the temperature reaches 90 degrees below zero if it is fully charged, that Is, if the hydrometer shows its specific gravity to be 1,300. If the battery is allowed to get very low with a specific gravity of 1,150 It will frenzo ot 10 degree aJxivezero. Moral: Koep j our battery fully charged 7n winter. 6. When the electrical system is short circuited the first thing to do is to examine the fuse box for a burned-out fuse. Then look at the wiring connections. 7. Shut oft the ignition and also the throttle when, going down a long hill. It will mean a big saving in gasoline. Even if you use the engine as a brake shut them off. With both or one op-n you draw out a great deal of gasoline which is not used to propel the car. 8. Soft water is preferable to hard water for filling the cooling flyBtem. Use strained or filtered rain water if obtainable. 9. Over-size tires save ono-fourth to one-half in upketp in the long run because there is mor durability and more resiliency to absorb the road jars. 10. The electric generator and starting motor should not be oiled oftener than every 500 or 600 miles. Ve but a few drops of very thin pure oil.

WEXU A BATTEET HAS A CAXXX. BEAT. "Nine days without a drink Is nothing to a storage battery," says Mr. Durham, the local Willard expert. "I've seen batteries go thirsty two or three times as long as that. "But the wise man who makes a point of giving his battery a drink of distilled water every tim? it needs it. to keep the level half an Inch above the top of the plates, will be served with better lights and quicker start and a longer run. There are not many things that a battery needs in the way of care, but distilled water is one of the few necessities."
