S. sugar equalisation boaVd have requested President Wilson to withold temporarily his signature to the McNary bill extending government control of sugar. It was announced at the White House today. POLISH RELIEF DRIVE STRARTS IN HAMMOND TODAY
Mrs. Paul B. Liplneki, 600 Hohman street, has been placed In charge or the Hammond drive to swell the Polish Kellef fund which is a nation-wide movement starting today. She has her assistants organized and expects to be able to send a substantial sum from Hammond. In speaking of the relief campaign today, Mrs. Llpinskl said: "In the recent death of Curtis Gull! of Boston the American Polish relief committee of 14 Kast Forty-seventh street. New York, has lost one of its most ardent workers in behalf of the stricken Poland. He was formerly United States Ambassador of Russia and especially familiar with conditions In Russian Poland. When the war devasted Poland and left millions of people homeless and htarving he volunteered his services of this committee and was put at the head of the list of vice-presidents. Ills co-operation with Mme. Sembrich, the president and the other officials, proved of great value and his nervicea In this time of Poland's greatest needs will be sorely missed. Mr. Guild was three times governor of Massachusetts." Only a short time before his death Mr. Guild made the following statement: "Of all the unfortunate noncombatants who are suffering from the horrors of war, none are in so terrible a condition as the unhappy people or Poland. I am Informed by private letters constantly of cases not merely of cold and hunger, but of death from exposure and starvation. I know of no people no deserving cf our aid a.i the innocent sufferers in Poland."

PREFER CHARGES AGAINST POLICE

Dec. 26. -Charges may be preferred again the policemen who yesterday arrested three women and two men who took part in the Christmas Day "amnesty" parade up Fifth ave. Miss Gladys Greiner. wealthy suffrage worker, announced that she would prefer charge against the policeman who arrested her. as she declared she and her fellow raraders were right In their "demonstration for the right of free speech and free assemblage." Miss Greiner and the other four defendants were arraigned today on charges of disorderly conduct and held under ball of $500 each for hearing Friday. The others arrested were Miss Mry Ehiffy. of Baltimore Dr. Gertrude Kelly, prominent woman doctor, and Samuel and Julius Friedman.

In marine circles here today expressed fear for the IT. S. shipping board steamer West Kasson, ten dnys overdue at Hampton Roads frum Rotterdam. She sailed from Rotterdam Dec. 4 and was due not later than the 16th.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS SERVICE1 SAN Jr'RAN'CISCO. Dec. 26. The schooner Okanogan, owned by Balfour Guthrie & Co., has gone ashore on a reef In Honolulu Bay, according to cable advices received here today. The cable said Capt. Saxon and a crew of fifteen or eighteen men had landed safely. The Okanogan carried a cargo of nitrates.
POLICE NOTES On a charge of carrying concealed weapons. Edward Fitzgerald was arrested in Hammond yesterday by Hammond police. He furnished bond and the matter has been continued In the police court until January 5th. P. Clingby was arrested by police officers at the Majestic hotel In Hammond thi morning, charged with intoxication .
LEADERS SILENT ON STRIKE'S END I INTERNATIONAL NEWS SFRVICE1 CLEVELAND. O.. Dec. 26. Leaders of the steel strike In Cleveland this afternoon refused to confirm or deny a report that a big break Is Imminent In the strikers" ranks here. The report became current after a Joint mass meeting of four of the locals involved in the strike was called for tonight. Some of the individual members of the union declared that at this meeting the men would vote to return to work. Their leaders, while admitting the possibility that the men might take a vote on the question Insisted that they would decide to remain out. It was said that the four locals have a membership of 5.000.

GAME WARDENS ARE KEPT BUSY Hunting licenses, or rather the absence of hunilng licenses, ar- causing lake county residents no end of trouble. Dally, companies of m-n are corraied by tho game wardens and found without licenses in their possession entitling them to the ripht to hunt. Ferrets are. also tab.,o when they arc used to hunt with. As a household pet they may be all right but when used to trace the wary hunny to his burrow, they are all out of favor with the game wardens. Yesterday Game Warden I,. HESSVILLE WOMAN STRUCK BY AUTO A man by the name of Cole, employed at the Simplex and driving a Ford, ran down Mrs. Mary Clunds of R. R. 1, Hessville, at the four corners, Hammond, yesterday. fhe was knocked down and badly bruised ,about the body. Strangers saw that she received medical attention. It is alleged Cole failed to stop and see how badly the woman was hurt. She will recover.
The funeral services of John W. Rider, 376 A. lams street, Oary. whose death occurred at the Mercy hospital Tuesday evening following an Illness of pneumonia, was held at the home this morning. At eight o'clock services were also held at the Holy AngeKs church. The body was shipped to the former home at Jollet, 111., for burial. -Mr. UMer had been a resident of Gary for the last ten years.
