Br iBVnro CKATiiif. The Hammond American Legion basketball team won ita second rams of the season Saturday night by defeating the Kast Chicago five. 26 to 22. on the tatter's floor. Both teams displayed uperlor brand of covering-up while, the oontcst gave the fans a chance to see n of the hardest fought early season STa-rnes staged at the Twin Cities this year. The first few minutes found the defensive work of both teams, going at top peed. East Chicago was first to score n a free throw, while Captain Tollard tied the count a minute later. After ten fenlnutes of play, the Kast Chicago layrs were losing- some of their wind, with the result that Hammond at the end Of the first half led by an IS to 13 Count. Hammond came back strong in the e-ond half and outpassed the Kast Chicago crew with ease. Veenker, former Mich I (fan star and the present athletic roach at the Hammond high school, kept j1h Hammond five In the lead by his Ij-rttty shots through the net from the 'Cm'cr of the floor. Sheridan and Clarence Thompson were guarded closely, but the former showed

Mack Thompson was put out of the contest for four personal fouls and Artie Hess switched into one of the guard positions! . Given, another of the old class at East Chicago high school, 'was the only substitution for Captain Parrow's clan. After the game, the Hammond players and fans were entertained at a luncheon and musical by the East Chicago Club at their club rooms. Boston baseball fans whose ears are closest to the ground are prepared to hear any week that Babe Ruth, champion hitter of home runs, has been sold to another club. It Is no secret that the Red Sox management Is prepared for a lot of trouble with Ruth on the matter of salary again this spring, despite the fact that last spring's controversy with the player was ended by his signing a three-year contract at $10,000 a year. Popular as "Babe" is with his mates, it is undisputed that he tried the patience of tho management last season and that it will not be repeated.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES1 "WHITING. Ijd.. IXc 2 2. The Owls' team finished up last week-end with a couple of hard earned victories. On Friday night they played the Seweaxd lark Meteors and the little fellows played true to form proving themselves one of the hardest nuts for-the Owl aggregation to put over a victory. The game .ended 3S-2S in the Owls' favor. On Saturday night the Owls traveled to Michigan City to play the Y. M. C. A. Nam of that place. After forty minutes of hard basketball the score stood at 34 all. In the five minutes overtime the Owls scored seven points to Michigan City's goose egg. This game was a very good example of what poor officiating can do. it being necesary to put up an argument that would do the best legal talent of the county credit in order to have the referee withdraw one of at least two illegal baskets which Michigan City made. The director of the Michigan City T. M. C. A. stood by the Owls when they called the ofUclal on one decision and finally the referee admitted that he was responsible for allowing the players to be so lax, he having called but one foul on Michigan City In the forty minutes of play. The next game for the Owls will probably be on next Friday night against some strong Chicago team at the high school atidftorlum.

Harvard University's football squad halted in Chicago yesterday for four hours. The t;am Is on its way to Pasadena, where it meets the University of Oregon on New Tear's Day. Vorty-fivt rlayers and coaches made up the party, the entire number being guests of the Harvard Club during their stay. An rutomobile ride over the city's boulevards, a siicnal drill in the University Club ball room and a real training table dinner were part of the program. A reception was also held at the University Club, during which Coach Fisher, Captain Murray and Halfback Casey made short talks in which they expressed their confidence of victory.
