The average person can read a line of three to seven words, which contains not more than two syllables. Whv go against this law of vision? Why string out a headline to fourteen or sixteen words? Watch continually the way newspapers handle head lines in their birj stories. Newspapers are compelled to tell the story of the world's events in headlines. Good advertising must compete with the news columns of the newspaper. You must have your headings as interesting as the news heads. This requires concentration. You wouldn't think of putting a five dollar ad in a fifty dollar space. Certainly not. Don't overcrowd your ad with text. The average woman will read from 125 to 200 words, while most men will not read more than 50 to 75 words. The best display advertisement is written by the stoic owner. He knows his customers, he knows his merchandise better than any one else; and, getting down to brass tacks, good advertising copy is nothing but salesmanship talk over the counter. It must sound like you talk over the counter, must breathe your personality. The average merchant depends upon headlines, honest copy, clean cut illustrations and forceful text in carrying his message to the public. Mis copy should be in the hands of the printer two days bef-ore appearing in the paper. The Times has on hand beautiful holiday cuts for all lines of business, which will be furnished free to its patrons. If you need assistance in getting up your ad phone 3100.
