N'o sris enpine ever built wilt withstand the rnxapes of repeated overheat -in If- "Endliie fever." a chronic oxerheating has been termed by mechanics, probably is the most frt-Tuent cause for rapid deterioration of motors and motor equipment. And if a chronic case is, rot quhkly remedied, if will result in disintcKriition of the most vital part of the autoniob.le. That is the warning belnn sounded broadcast by American manufacturers of engines and motoring equipment in an f Pfort to educate automobile owners in thee are of cars. If repeated inquiries rec Ivcd by manufacturers are a criterion, motorists are Icarninir Already they have discoxercd that a boilniK raduitor means something more serious than a hard pull- They are learning that steam jets spouting from the radiator cap are first indication of a weak "heart" under the hood. Rut in nine cases out of ten. manufacturers say. that is as far as the average motorist can go in his diagnosis. He knows there is something wrong, but he doesn't know what it is or how- to go about the job of "doctering." CARBON ALSO HEATS. Driving with the spark plug too far retarded Is one of the frtquerrt causes for overheating. With the plug retarded the spark occurs when the piston J far down the cylinder and a laro area of the cylinder wall is exposed to the rrark flame. Carbon also often causes excessive heat, Carbon deposits result in preignltion. due to increased compression and 'o specks of cirbon becoming incandescent and prematurely tiring the incoming charge. The most common caus of "engine fever" is a defective fan belt. A belt that stretches and slips will not spin the fan fast enough to keep the engine cool. And any belt that will stretch eventually will slip over its pulleys. CARRY EXTRA BELT. Vulcanized fabric belts rapidly are replacing leather and other materials formerly used to propel the engine cooler. The fabric in this nonsjip bolt is cut bias, increasing its strength and
