GUARDING THE. FAMILY HEALTH A few aimplo, f anianiantal rulei of (Hat that ry houewifo ahould know
Thar an cumter of popular theories of cit that moat houaewive implicitly b-aliava and unfortunately put into practice on their famOiea. One of t ho moat oommon of tkee current health fictiona is, for example, that milk and chocolate are universally ditftiL! and nutritious, that any and ill kind of fish are not only economical but nutritiva) and more easily digested than flesh, and that a man can live upon nuts alone. The sensible housewife will not accept such theories too readily but will makes investigations for herself and will adapt her menus to the particular needs of the individual members of her family. She will not, (or instance, force a child to drink milk when he obviously dislikes it "and it does not agree with him; nor will she compel and adult with a delicate digestion to eat a lot of nuts in the mistaken belief that they will cause him no discomfort. Even toast and tea the traditional food for invalidshas recently come to be looked at askance by medical authorities who question the wisdom of filling a patient's stomach with tannic acid and what is equivalent to dry sawdust. A
little common sense and a few simple rules will serve to guide the mother
and housewife in the selection of food for her family that each member there
of may derive the greatest ipossible
strength and nutriment from this food. Xtere a child or an adult is in
clined to be bilious a dash or lime
water should always be mixed with

child with a poor digestion should

corn meal but should take in their place rice or thickened milk which ara quite easily digested even by a delicat stomach. Here is a table showing briefly the general effect of certain staple articles of food upon tha digestion:
Indian meal Sweets and rare beef Coffee with cream Wheat flour Oatmeal Figs Ripe peaches and apples or an orange eaten at bedtime Nuts
Laxative Cause acidity of tha stomach Slightly aperient Constipating Heating One of the best natural cathartic Excellent aids to digestion When fresh, difficult to digest; when salted, easily digested. Constipating

There Is no doubt but that thi suit is a French model for the short skirt betrays its origin. While her in America skirts ara somewhat shorter, they have not yet reached tho French limit. The embroidered inserts at the side of the coat, while very fashionable In this year of embroidery, are also practical for they do away with the use of costly fur wher it would get very hard wear. The fur band In the back, the cuffs and collar, which ties oddly in the buck with streamers, ara of sable squirrel
SPECIAL SESSION DECEMBER FIRST. tTIHES BUREAU AT STATE CAPITAL) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.. Oct. 3. A rarort Is now current here to the effect that a special session of the legislature will convene about December 1. The date for a special session was originally set for September, but this date was looked upon with misgiving by state officials and party leaders generally because of the unrest Incident to thee hange in tho taxing system. Within a few days the state board of tax commissioners will announce the tax levie for all governmental units In ihe state that have applied for increases in ratis. When the levies are disposed of It is believed the governor will feel free to call a session.
CARRY YOUR IDENTIFICATION CARD "Many motorists." says Charles 11. Hayes, president of tho Chicago Motor Club, "traveling from the United States to Canada overlook a very important item: That 13 the identification card given to the car owner by the secretary of state at the timo he procures his license. The Canadian authorities are very strict In this matter of identification, and the traveler will save himself a great deal of inconvenience by bringing his Identification card with him."
